Ride vibration levels at the driver-seat interface are a function of the ride dynamics of the entire vehicle, including tires, suspension, structure, cargo, cab, and seat. A 5-axle tractor-semitrailer was selected as the baseline vehicle and a ride dynamic model was developed which can be conveniently modified to accommodate a number of variations in semitrailer configurations. An in-plane model with 11 degrees-of-freedom was developed, assuming engine and tractor chassis as one rigid body. The ride vibration levels at the driver-seat interface due to random road undulations were investigated through the use of this model. Assuming small perturbations relative to overall dimensions of the vehicle, a set of simultaneous, non-homogeneous, second order differential equations of the vehicle model were formulated using Lagrange's energy method and a software package TRIDE was developed to determine ride response of the vehicle for given parameters and displacement spectral density of the road profile

This report presents the rationale, objectives, and highlights of a study conducted to determine optimal suspension damping for urban buses to reduce the magnitudes of vibration transmitted to the driver, as well as the dynamic forces transmitted to the pavement & chassis. The study included: formulation of computer models of classic & low-floor buses to study their dynamic performance under specified ranges of operating variables; laboratory & road tests to examine the validity of the models and to study the role of varying operating conditions; formulation & solving of a multi-parameter non-linear optimization problem to identify the optimal parameters for multi-stage hydraulic dampers for candidate buses; and field tests & computer simulations to demonstrate the potential benefits of the optimal dampers
