L'examen des archives du peintre et l'analyse en laboratoire permettent de reconstruire l'histoire d'un tableau qui suscita autant la fascination que la répulsion. -- La place du mort (Courbet): 1851. "Un enterrement à Ornans" fait scandale. Il n'est pourtant que la représentation d'une cérémonie funéraire, avec des gens ordinaires. Le réalisme de Courbet n'est pas une simple reproduction photographique du réel, mais une véritable expérience métaphysique du regard et de la perception. Le tableau est une oeuvre aux implications symboliques et plastiques secrètes, une oeuvre très complexe qui n'a pas fini de surprendre
