Effect of run timing on the exploitation by anglers of Atlantic salmon in the Miramichi River by Robert George Randall( Book )
2 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 4 libraries worldwide
This report estimates the exploitation rate of salmon by anglers in the Miramichi River, comparing exploitation rates of early and late run salmon; examines the feasibility of estimating spawning escapement from angling catch data; and identifies the tagging and research requirements if mark-recapture data from anglers are going to be used to estimate spawning escapement in the river in the future. Adult salmon were tagged during their upstream migration at Millbank annually from 1966-75 and from 1985-87. Tags returned by anglers were documented as to capture date, location and tag number. A subsample of anglers were asked to report their catch by major tributary and total catches were then estimated from the subsamples. The angling data has been available since 1969; angling catches for 1966-69 were estimated
Changes in the abundance and distribution of the American oyster population of the Dunk River public fishing area of Bedeque Bay, Prince Edward Island by Thomas William Sephton( Book )
2 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 4 libraries worldwide
The American oyster population of the Dunk River public fishing area is one of the most productive in Prince Edward Island and remains one of the most important sources of legal-size oysters for the spring relay fishery. This report is an assessment of the distribution, abundance and structure of the oyster population of the area based on a quantitative study conducted in July 1987. A standard sampling procedure, based on previous studies conducted from 1969-77, permits an examination of the changes that have occurred in the population since it was last surveyed in 1977. The data reported for 1972 are re-analyzed with additional information and re-presented for comparison. The study was designed to obtain baseline field data required to initiate further studies on the biology and ecology of the Bedeque Bay oyster population
Stock composition of northumberland strait, nova scotia atlantic salmon (salmo salar) commercial fisheries by Canada( Book )
2 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 4 libraries worldwide
One of the major challenges facing the management of Atlantic salmon is estimating the stock mixture of commercial fisheries. This report presents the results of scale samples from Atlantic salmon caught in 1983 in the Northumberland Strait, Nova Scotia commercial fisheries, as well as salmon returning to Miramichi, New Brunswick and 4 Northumberland Stait, Nova Scotia rivers. Circuli count and distance measurements in freshwater, first sea summer and first sea winter zones were used to differentiate stock origin of the commercial catch. Only virgin 2SW salmon were analyzed, as they comprised most of the commercial catch
The LaHave River : physiography and potential for Atlantic salmon production by R.W Gray( Book )
2 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 4 libraries worldwide
An extensive Atlantic Salmon enhancement project was undertaken on the main branch of the LaHave River above Morgan Falls beginning in 1969. This report describes the involvement of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in improving fish passage on the river; outlines some of the physical, biological and chemical characteristics of the watershed; presents data on stream obstructions, stream profiles, water discharge, water temperature and water chemistry; and describes the spawning and nursery habitat classified according to type and measured quantitatively for each major salmon producing tributary of the river
Abundance, distribution and dynamics of the american oyster population of the public fishing area of caraquet bay, new brunswick by Thomas William Sephton( Book )
2 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 4 libraries worldwide
The American oyster is a common inhabitant of the shallow bays and estuaries along the east coast of North America, with the most northern commercially exploited population located in Caraquet Bay, New Brunswick. This report is an assessment of the distribution, abundance, and structure of the oyster population of the public fishing area based on a quantitative study conducted in June 1987. A standard sampling procedure, based on previous studies conducted in 1974 and 1979, permits an examination of the changes occurring in the population since it was last surveyed. This study was designed to obtain the baseline field data required to initiate further studies on the biology and ecology of the Caraquet Bay oyster population

The effects of different fishing methods on the mortality of eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) by Thomas William Sephton( Book )
1 edition published in 1992 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
The public fishing grounds and picking areas are the most important sources of legal size eastern oysters for the leasehold relay and market fisheries in P.E.I. and New Brunswick. This study examined the effects of hand picking and tonging harvesting methods on the mortality of intertidal oysters and the survival of oyster spat settling on the oyster cultch. Two experiments were set up adjacent to one another in a sheltered cove in the North River, P.E.I. in early July 1990. The first experiment involved hand picking and compared the effects of crawling and walking while hand picking oysters, and of tonging them from a dory. The second experiment examined the survival of oyster spat settling onto naturally occurring cultch that was disturbed and exposed by the tonging process
An evaluation of possible causes of the decline in pre-fishery abundance of North American Atlantic salmon by David Kenneth Cairns( Book )
1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
Estimated numbers of Atlantic salmon of North American origin prior to any fishery have decreased by half to 2/3 since the early 1980s. This report was originally prepared as background for an international workshop held to develop research strategies to determine the cause(s) of that decline. It presents a comprehensive list of potential causes of the salmon decline, summarizes the main features of each hypothesized cause, and evaluates the plausibility of potential causes. The plausibility analysis covers salmon originating in Quebec, Canadian Maritime, and New England rivers. The 62 hypotheses presented apply to six life stages (returning adult to egg, egg to hatch, hatch to smolt, smolt out-migration, ocean life, and adult return through estuaries) in eight categories (fisheries, aquaculture, disease, predation, life history, chemical environment, physical/biological environment, thermal environment). Hypotheses are scored by area, degree of effect, magnitude (area times degree), and trend
Gear types, seasonal distribution of effort, and bycatch of the smelt fishery in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence by David Kenneth Cairns( Book )
1 edition published in 1989 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
The smelt fishery in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence is a significant part of the economy of the Maritime provinces and eastern Quebec. The revenue from the smelt fishery is particularly important to many people because smelts are caught in the fall and winter, when there is little income from other fisheries. This report presents results of a questionnaire sent to holders of smelt licences in the southern Gulf to gain basic information on the distribution of smelt fishing effort in the area, the timing of the fishery, and the type of gear used. An important additional objective was to learn about the bycatch of other species in smelt gear, particularly that of juvenile Atlantic herring. Bycatch of blueback herring and alewives was also investigated
Flushing of oyster (Crassostrea virginica) larvae from a small tidal bay by David A Booth( Book )
1 edition published in 1993 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
Caraquet Bay is a shallow, semi-enclosed estuarine bay situated on the south shore of the Baie des Chaleurs. The bay supports the most northern commercial population of eastern (American) oyster and the collection and cultivation of oysters is a traditional occupation of the area. A study was undertaken in 1988 to measure current, stratification, and larval concentrations to establish the mechanisms of exchange to and from the bay

Effects of land use practices on fish, shellfish, and their habitats on Prince Edward Island by David Kenneth Cairns( Book )
2 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
Contains papers, abstracts, and extended abstracts representing the scientific proceedings of a workshop held to examine the impacts of land use practices on aquatic resources in Prince Edward Island. The introductory papers provide background on the history of land use in the province, the province's freshwater & estuarine fisheries resources, and the acts, regulations, & policies pertaining to protection of aquatic environments in the province. The main section is arranged under four broad topics that reflect the avenues by which land use practices may affect aquatic resources: sedimentation, toxic chemicals, livestock access, and estuarine eutrophication
