Gear types, seasonal distribution of effort, and bycatch of the smelt fishery in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence by David Kenneth Cairns( Book )
2 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 4 libraries worldwide
The smelt fishery in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence is a significant part of the economy of the Maritime provinces and eastern Quebec. The revenue from the smelt fishery is particularly important to many people because smelts are caught in the fall and winter, when there is little income from other fisheries. This report presents results of a questionnaire sent to holders of smelt licences in the southern Gulf to gain basic information on the distribution of smelt fishing effort in the area, the timing of the fishery, and the type of gear used. An important additional objective was to learn about the bycatch of other species in smelt gear, particularly that of juvenile Atlantic herring. Bycatch of blueback herring and alewives was also investigated
The LaHave River : physiography and potential for Atlantic salmon production by R. W Gray( Book )
2 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 4 libraries worldwide
An extensive Atlantic Salmon enhancement project was undertaken on the main branch of the LaHave River above Morgan Falls beginning in 1969. This report describes the involvement of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in improving fish passage on the river; outlines some of the physical, biological and chemical characteristics of the watershed; presents data on stream obstructions, stream profiles, water discharge, water temperature and water chemistry; and describes the spawning and nursery habitat classified according to type and measured quantitatively for each major salmon producing tributary of the river
Effect of run timing on the exploitation by anglers of Atlantic salmon in the Miramichi River by R. G Randall( Book )
2 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 4 libraries worldwide
This report estimates the exploitation rate of salmon by anglers in the Miramichi River, comparing exploitation rates of early and late run salmon; examines the feasibility of estimating spawning escapement from angling catch data; and identifies the tagging and research requirements if mark-recapture data from anglers are going to be used to estimate spawning escapement in the river in the future. Adult salmon were tagged during their upstream migration at Millbank annually from 1966-75 and from 1985-87. Tags returned by anglers were documented as to capture date, location and tag number. A subsample of anglers were asked to report their catch by major tributary and total catches were then estimated from the subsamples. The angling data has been available since 1969; angling catches for 1966-69 were estimated
Stock composition of northumberland strait, nova scotia atlantic salmon (salmo salar) commercial fisheries by Canada( Book )
2 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 3 libraries worldwide
One of the major challenges facing the management of Atlantic salmon is estimating the stock mixture of commercial fisheries. This report presents the results of scale samples from Atlantic salmon caught in 1983 in the Northumberland Strait, Nova Scotia commercial fisheries, as well as salmon returning to Miramichi, New Brunswick and 4 Northumberland Stait, Nova Scotia rivers. Circuli count and distance measurements in freshwater, first sea summer and first sea winter zones were used to differentiate stock origin of the commercial catch. Only virgin 2SW salmon were analyzed, as they comprised most of the commercial catch
Serum protein concentration and somatic index in relation to morphometric maturity for male snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) in the Baie des Chaleurs by R. J Cormier( Book )
1 edition published in 1993 in English and held by 3 libraries worldwide
Meat yield is an important factor in crab fishery. Snow crab in postmolt have a much lower meat yield than an animal which has attained intermolt. The purpose of this study is to compare the serum protein concentrations and somatic indices of juvenile and mature male snow crab and to explain these changes in relation with morphological maturity. The paper describes the determination of molt stage, determination of serum protein concentration, allometric measurements and statistical analysis, results and discussion
Annual and geographical variations in sealworm (Pseudoterranova decipiens) larvae in rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) from the Gulf of St. Lawrence by Thomas Landry( Book )
2 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 3 libraries worldwide
The use of rainbow smelt as a host indicator of sealworm abundance offers an accurate temporal and geographical index for inshore areas. The smelt sealworm survey was initiated in 1984 with 4 locations sampled along the New Brunswick coast, and has increased to 9 locations from the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 1989. This inshore survey is complementary to the American plaice sealworm survey for offshore areas. The data collected from 1989 are analyzed with those from past collections (1984-88) to evaluate variations in sealworm abundance over a 5-year period

The introductory papers provide background on the history of land use in the province, the province's freshwater & estuarine fisheries resources, and the acts, regulations, & policies pertaining to protection of aquatic environments in the province. The main section is arranged under four broad topics that reflect the avenues by which land use practices may affect aquatic resources: sedimentation, toxic chemicals, livestock access, and estuarine eutrophication
Data from the Black River fish counting fence, Kouchibouguac National Park, from 1984-92 by G Delaney( Book )
1 edition published in 1993 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
Parks Canada and the Science Branch of the Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans have been operating a fish counting fence at Black River, within Kouchibouguac National Park, New Brunswick, since 1984. The project involved monitoring upstream and downstream movements of all fish species at the Black River site. Black River thus assumed an "index river" status, whereby data obtained will be used to manage anadromous and catadromous stocks in the Gulf Region
Suspended sediment analysis for three P.E.I. streams using sediment rating curves by Daniel Caissie( Book )
1 edition published in 1989 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
The impact of high levels of inorganic sediment are not documented on aquatic life and, in particular, on salmonid fishes. Inorganic sediment, in high concentrations, can be a harmful pollutant during all freshwater stages of the salmonid life cycle. These sediments may be in suspension or they may form a deposit on the gravel bed. This study evaluated the suspended sediment characteristics of 3 river basins in Prince Edward Island, and selected and evaluated a sediment model to enable better prediction of sediment loads and their effect on salmonids. A sediment rating curve in the form of a mathematical relationship between stream discharge and suspended sediment concentration is developed for each river basin which is used to predict sediment concentration for days when only stream discharge data are available

A survey of dilute lakes on the south coast of insular Newfoundland in relation to natural and anthropogenic acidification by D.A Scruton( Book )
1 edition published in 1989 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
Recent lake surveys in insular Newfoundland have confirmed the extreme susceptibility of the island's freshwaters to anthropogenic acidification but evidence of widespread acidification damage is lacking. The south coast receives the highest annual precipitation in the province, ranging from 1500 mm in the east to over 2000 mm in the west. This survey sampled lakes along the south coast from Port aux Basques to Swift Current, within major and minor river watersheds draining to the south. All lakes were located in remote, undisturbed areas removed from population centers and point sources of pollution, in geologically acid-sensitive terrain. A total of 116 lakes were sampled between July 18 and 24, 1983, 90 for the first time. Samples were analyzed for pH, alkalinity, and conductivity within 24h of collection, then analyzed for 17 separate parameters, while 8 additional parameters were calculated
