Film genre Word War II ( visu )
1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
This documentary tells the story of the WW II genre. It begins with the British wartime film 'In Which We Serve' and proceeds to take in the groundbreaking neo-realistic 'Rome the Open City' that came to symbolise the wartime Italy and the classically beautiful and yet extremely brutal 'Fires on the Plain', one of the first and most controversial Japanese post-war, war films. The '80s yielded 'Come and See,' a heart-wrenching Russian film about a teenager witnessing German atrocities in Belorussia, and 'Das Boot,' the German film about U-boats and the futility of war. The program concludes with our times and the story of Private Ryan

The history of epic religious films ( visu )
1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 0 libraries worldwide
Early filmmakers were quick to realise the potential of epic religious movies. They lured their audience away from church at a time when religious groups didn't approve of dancing or gambling. Such films included Cecil B. De Mille's original Ben-Hur (1929), and the even earlier Italian epic Cabiria (1914), in which the heroine is threatened with human sacrifice in the temple of Moloch. Spiralling costs sidelined the epic for more than 30 years, but advances in digital technology underpinned the making of Gladiator (2000). Its success is testament to the epic's continuing appeal
