"David Copperfield", jedno z nejlepších děl Dickensových, zobrazuje v širokém románovém toku Anglii první poloviny 19. století. Autor nám předvádí množství plasticky viděných postav, tu lidí andělsky dobrých, tuďábelskyzlých, asleduje svého hrdinu na jeho životní cestě od kolébky až do let vyzrálého mužství. V Davidově historii je vtěleno mnoho autobiografických prvků, zvláště v líčení dětství, krutých zážitků školských, zkušeností zprácevobchodě, vlastního manželství. Autorův otec je vtělen v postavu lehkomyslného pana Micawbera, který se stal literárním typem podobně jako jeho blíženec, Shakespearův Falstaff. Nezapomenutelná svou ošklivosti zůstávápostavašplhavceakariéristy Uriáše Heepa, majícího svého bratra v Ščedrinovu Juduškovi. Líčení, v němž vyjadřuje Dickens svou lásku k lidu a víru v něj, je idylické, avšak román jako celek nám realisticky zpodobuje měsťanskouspolečnostAngliesvédoby. Nakonec ovšem dobro a láska zvítězí a zlo dojde trestu
