Abstract:
Notes:
This book by Lisa Nocks, PhD, a historian of science, technology, and media culture, is part of the Greenwood Publishing "Technographies" series. _The Robot_ is an extensively researched "biography" of the concept of robotic machines, from their first iteration in archaic myth and religious ceremonies, through the development of mechanical processes and attempts at self-propelled machines, to the latest developments in the field. Part II covers the first industrial manipulators in the twentieth century and the development of AI as it relates to robotics. Part III covers the most recent advances in industrial, service and entertainment robotics. The author provides background on the engineering and AI specialists who conceived and developed these robots, as well as their theories about human-robot interaction and their application of cognitive studies to the development of humanoid robots. The volume includes descriptions and statistics about robot labs and companies around the world, and photos of some of the most recent accomplishments - from the winner of the DARPA Grand Challenge to the humanoid robot ASIMO. An extensive time line and glossary of terms is included. The further Reading section includes websites of robotics labs and associations, and articles by robot engineers. This text is designed to be useful as either a library reference or as a classroom text.
