This small volume published by the Kawneer Company in 1956 (now a division of Alcoa Aluminum), tells the story of the founding and growth of The Kawneer Company of Niles, Michigan. The company's founder, Francis J.Plym, is known as the father of the modern storefront for his 1906 invention that allowed the use of large plate glass windows to replace the previous small window panes which fronted stores. Kawneer was Plym's factory which produced the materials which literally changed the face of downtowns throughout the world beginning in the early twentieth century. Among the many Kawneer inventions is the self closing door. This small book is perhaps the only detailed telling of the story of a largely overlooked industrial genius of the twentieth century.
