Olafur Eliasson by Madeleine Grynsztejn( Book )

15 editions published between 2000 and 2008 in English and held by 573 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With images that suggest a modern day Caspar David Friedrich, sculptor, installation artist and photographer Olafur Eliasson recreates in elegant forms the extremes of the landscape and the atmospheric conditions of his native Denmark, resulting in a kind of techno-Romanticism. Now based in Berlin, Eliasson rebuilds in the gallery fragments of a faraway land: icebergs at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, 'windmills' at the Louisiana Museum in Humlebaek, Denmark. For Eliasson, immaterial sensations such as temperature, smell, taste, air and magnetic waves become sculptural elements. A simple circular cut in the ceiling of a gallery in Los Angeles, for example, recreates the feeling of the weak Scandinavian sun, and becomes a kind of giant sun-clock reminiscent of both Gordon Matta-Clark's architectural cut-outs and the oculus of the Pantheon." "In her survey, curator Madeleine Grynsztejn examines the unique position of the artist, overlapping technological and artistic innovation in the creation of his art. Critic and curator Daniel Birnbaum discusses with the artist the role of location and the immediate environment in both his gallery (indoor) and remote-site (outdoor) work. Architectural theorist Michael Speaks looks in his Focus at the work Green river (1998) particularly in relation to filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni's 1964 film, Red Desert. The artist has selected an extract from Henri Bergson's Creative Evolution (1907) dealing with our subjective, visual response to nature, a theme central also in the artist's own work. Olafur Eliasson's writings include an essay on that most banal of topics, the weather, and an open letter entitled 'Dear Everybody' addressed to the viewers."--Jacket

The hospitality of presence : problems of otherness in Husserl's phenomenology by Daniel Birnbaum( Book )

17 editions published between 1998 and 2008 in English and held by 125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Two framing devices have been employed in this edition of 'The Hospitality of Presence" : an anthology of citations from writers who explore Husserl's themes in a fashion that seems to radically alter the point of view, and a series of interventions by artist Olafur Eliasson, an artist whose work can be understood as an attempt to position our perceptual possibilities within a framework that goes beyond ther perspectives of a phenomenology of embodiment, no matter how sophisticated."--Inside front cover

This volume accompanies the first major solo exhibition on American artist Paul Chan (born 1973) since his series The 7 Lights was presented at the New Museum in 2008. Chan is one of the most versatile and unpredictable artists of his generation, and certainly one of the most original voices in contemporary art today. Active as artist, writer and publisher, he engages the viewer in a challenging discourse about the place of art in social and political life. Chan's combination of old and new works casts new light on the content and complexity of his fascinating art. In addition to early video installations, rarely seen works on paper, sculptures and works from the 7 Lights series, this volume includes reproductions of the 1,005 painted book covers that constitute Volumes (2012), and new works created for the exhibition
Thinking through painting : reflexivity and agency beyond the canvas( Book )

6 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 107 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Painting has demonstrated remarkable perseverance in the expanding field of contemporary art and the surrounding ecology of media images. It appears, however, to have dispelled its own once-uncontested material basis: no longer confined to being synonymous with a flat picture plane hung on the wall, today, painting instead tends to emphasize the apparatus of its appearance and the conduits of its circulation. With contributions by Peter Geimer, Isabelle Graw, and André Rottmann, 'Thinking through Painting' investigates painting's traits and reception in cultural and socioeconomic discourse
