This book documents recent dramatic breakthroughs and prospects for even more important future developments in a wide variety of fields and applications of science and technology related to `nanotechnology', all involving the control of matter on the nanometer-length scale, that is, at the level of atoms, molecules, and supramolecular structures. As the twenty-first century unfolds, nanotechnology's impact on the health, wealth, and security of the world's people is expected to be at least as significant as the combined influences in this century of antibiotics, the integrated circuit, and human-made polymers. The book covers fundamental scientific issues for nanotechnology and reviews progress in the development of the necessary tools for nanotechnology research and applications (e.g. theory, modeling and simulation, experimental methods, and instruments such as scanning probe microscopes). It also surveys a wide variety of current and potential application areas of nanotechnology, including: dispersions, coatings, and large surface area structures; nanodevices, nanoelectronics, and nanosensors; materials science and applications of bulk nanostructured materials with novel properties; biology, medicine, and healthcare; and energy, chemicals, and environmental science. The book incorporates the views of leading experts from U.S. government, academia, and the private sector. It reflects the consensus reached at a workshop held in January 1999, and detailed in contributions submitted thereafter by members of the U.S. science and engineering community. It describes challenges that are posed and opportunities that are offered by nanotechnology and outlines the steps that must be taken in order for humanity to benefit from the advances that are envisioned. This emphasizes three crucial areas: developing a balanced research and development infrastructure, advancing critical research areas, and nurturing the scientific and technical workforce of the next century

Entropy-Driven Loss of Gas-Phase Group V Species from GOLD/III-V Compound Semiconductor Systems( Book )

Temperature dependent chemical interactions between Au and nine III-V compound semiconductors (III=A1, Ga, In and V=P, As, Sb) have been calculated using bulk thermodynamic properties. Enthalpic considerations alone are insufficient to predict metal/compound-semiconductor reactivities. The entropy of vaporization of the group V elements is shown to be an extremely important driving force for chemical reactions involving the III-V's, since it enables several endothermic reactions to occur spontaneously under certain temperature and pressure conditions. Plots of either Gibb's Free energies of reaction or equilibrium vapor pressure of the group v element versus temperature are used to predict critical reaction temperatures for each of the systems studied. These plots agree extremely well with previous experimental observations of thin film reactions of Au on GaAs

Memristor‐Based Analog Computation and Neural Network Classification with a Dot Product Engine( )

Abstract: Using memristor crossbar arrays to accelerate computations is a promising approach to efficiently implement algorithms in deep neural networks. Early demonstrations, however, are limited to simulations or small‐scale problems primarily due to materials and device challenges that limit the size of the memristor crossbar arrays that can be reliably programmed to stable and analog values, which is the focus of the current work. High‐precision analog tuning and control of memristor cells across a 128 × 64 array is demonstrated, and the resulting vector matrix multiplication (VMM) computing precision is evaluated. Single‐layer neural network inference is performed in these arrays, and the performance compared to a digital approach is assessed. Memristor computing system used here reaches a VMM accuracy equivalent of 6 bits, and an 89.9% recognition accuracy is achieved for the 10k MNIST handwritten digit test set. Forecasts show that with integrated (on chip) and scaled memristors, a computational efficiency greater than 100 trillion operations per second per Watt is possible. Abstract : Large memristor arrays composed of hafnium oxide are demonstrated with suitability for computing matrix operations at higher power efficiency than digital systems. The nonmemory application of memristors is performed in an analog computing platform. Computational operations with 6 bit equivalent precision are shown and utilized to directly compute neural network inference within a memristor crossbar
