KL : a history of the Nazi concentration camps by Nikolaus Wachsmann( Book )

35 editions published between 2015 and 2017 in 4 languages and held by 1,818 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Wachsmann offers an ... integrated account of the Nazi concentration camps from their inception in 1933 through their demise, seventy years ago, in the spring of 1945. The Third Reich has been studied in more depth than virtually any other period in history, and yet until now there has been no history of the camp system that tells the full story of its broad development and the everyday experiences of its inhabitants, both perpetrators and victims, and all those living in what Primo Levi called 'the gray zone'"--Amazon.com
Hitler's prisons : legal terror in Nazi Germany by Nikolaus Wachsmann( Book )

23 editions published between 2004 and 2006 in 3 languages and held by 1,291 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Nikolaus Wachsmann describes the operation and function of legal terror in the Third Reich and brings Nazi prisons to life through the harrowing stories of individual inmates. Drawing on a vast array of archival materials, he traces the series of changes in prison policies and practice that led to racial abuse, brutal violence, slave labour, starvation and mass killings. Wachsmann demonstrates that 'ordinary' legal officials were ready collaborators who helped to turn courts and prisons into key components in the Nazi web of terror. He concludes with a discussion of the whitewash of the Nazi legal system in post-war West Germany."--Jacket
Concentration camps in Nazi Germany : the new histories by Jane Caplan( Book )

13 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 602 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The notorious concentration camp system was a central pillar of the Third Reich, supporting the Nazi war against political, racial and social outsiders whilst also intimidating the population at large. Established during the first months of the Nazi dictatorship in 1933, several million men, women and children of many nationalities had been incarcerated in the camps by the end of the Second World War. At least two million lost their lives. This volume offers the first overview of the recent scholarship that has changed the way the camps are studied over the last two decades. Written by an international team of experts, the book covers such topics as the earliest camps; social life, work and personnel in the camps; the public face of the camps; issues of gender and commemoration; and the relationship between concentration camps and the Final Solution. The book provides a comprehensive introduction to the current historiography of the camps, highlighting the key conclusions that have been made, commenting on continuing areas of debate, and suggesting possible directions for future research"--Publisher's description
The Nazi concentration camps, 1933-1939 : a documentary history( Book )

7 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 325 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Weeks after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, the Nazi regime established the first concentration camps in Germany. Initially used for real and suspected political enemies, the camps increasingly came under SS control and became sites for the repression of social outsiders and German Jews. Terror was central to the Nazi regime from the beginning, and the camps gradually moved toward the center of repression, torture, and mass murder during World War II and the Holocaust. This collection brings together revealing primary documents on the crucial origins of the Nazi concentration camp system in the prewar years between 1933 and 1939, which have been overlooked thus far. Many of the documents are unpublished and have been translated into English for the first time. These documents provide insight into the camps from multiple perspectives, including those of prisoners, Nazi officials, and foreign observers, and shed light on the complex relationship between terror, state, and society in the Third Reich"--
KL die Geschichte der nationalsozialistischen Konzentrationslager by Nikolaus Wachsmann( Book )

13 editions published between 2015 and 2018 in German and English and held by 228 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

6 editions published in 2014 in German and held by 121 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

4 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in Dutch and held by 48 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Bron: Flaptekst, uitgeversinformatie

Camps, the : a History of the Nazi Concentration Camps by Nikolaus Wachsmann( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In March of 1933, a disused factory surrounded by barbed wire held 223 prisoners in the town of Dachau. By the end of 1945, the SS concentration camp system had become an overwhelming landscape of terror. Twenty-two large camps and over one thousand satellite camps throughout Germany and Europe were at the heart of the Nazi campaign of repression and intimidation. The importance of the camps in terms of Nazi history and our modern world cannot be questioned. Dr Nikolaus Wachsmann is the first historian to write a complete history of the camps. Combining the political and the personal, Wachsmann will examine the organisation of such an immense genocidal machine, whilst drawing a vivid picture of life inside the camps for the individual prisoner. The book will give a voice to those typically forgotten in Nazi history: the 'social deviants', criminals and unwanted ethnicities that all faced the terror of the camps. Wachsmann will explore the practise of institutionalised murder and inmate collaboration with the SS selectively ignored by many historians. Pulling together a wealth of in-depth research, official documents, contemporary studies and the evidence of survivors themselves, KL will be a complete but accessible narrative

Under two dictators : prisoner of Stalin and Hitler by Margarete Buber-Neumann( Book )

2 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is a unique account by a survivor of both the Soviet and Nazi concentration camps: its author, Margarete Buber-Neumann, was a loyal member of the German Communist party. From 1935, she and her second husband, Heinz Neumann, were political refugees in Moscow. In April 1937, Neumann was arrested by the secret police, and executed by the end of the year. She herself was arrested in 1938. In "Under Two Dictators", Buber-Neumann describes the two years of suffering she endured in the Soviet prisons and in the huge Central-Asian concentration and slave labour camp of Karaganda; her extradition to the Gestapo in 1940 at the time of the Stalin-Hitler Friendship Pact; and, her five years of suffering in the Nazi concentration and death camp for women, Ravensbruck."--p. 4 of cover
