In the center of Riga, in the middle of the Daugava River, in the heart of the old town is an island that has long been called Hare, although there has never hares was not found. The old village houses, firewood woodpile, carefully harvested in the winter, fishing nets hung out to dry, the scent of water, grass, and fresh smells of the rustic property. Famous Latvian film director Aivars Freimanis long wanted to make a film about the Hare Island, to capture on film the "leaving nature" - leaving because it was known: the wooden huts are about to be torn down for the islanders have built normal city apartments in new areas of Riga. Perhaps the first film was conceived as a documentary. After all Freimanis - one of the founders of the flow, which is referred to as the Riga poetic school of documentary cinema. At what point does the film dared to break away from its documentary basis, we do not know. Almost all of his characters - these are real people of Hare Island. Fictional characters only two - he and she, a young worker Janka (I. Kalnins) and the girl Anita (A. Livmane). The history of dating, love and separation, as it is intended to bring together the documentary part of the film. The result is a very peculiar work - not a documentary, but does not play all the time showing us the victory through the document, the real nature of the word of the narration, over fiction

Vecas pagastmajas misterija = The mystery of the old parish house( Visual )

1 edition published in 2000 in Latvian and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

In this movie (based on a true story) within a movie, a director tries to film the tale of an old KGB activist living in a parish house. In the summer of 1941 the activist tortured and killed Latvians in the cellar of the house. Although the old man hires others to brick over the cellar door, the murdered people keep coming through the stones and never leave him in peace. Unbeknownst to the film makers, the "real" KGB activist, now an aged drunk, is milling about the film set. Moreover, the director and lead actor are competing for the love of the lead actress, and the film's producer wants the director to re-shoot parts of the movie.--Summary adapted from IMDB
