This programme sets out to test intelligence by avoiding the standard use of an IQ test. Seven people, highly successful in their different fields, are put through a series of different tests aimed to 'measure' their intellect. The framing of the documentary, including the narrator, is similar to those from a popular TV series called 'The Apprentice', where entrepreneurs are pitted against each other. Participants include Susan Polgar a champion chess player, Gerry Stratford a jet fighter pilot, Alex Prior a musical prodigy, Nathan Hasselbauer an IQ champion, Bonnie Greer a dramatist, Seth Lloyd a quantum physicist and Stella Vine an artist. Initially on the original standard IQ test the clear winners are Lloyd and Hasselbauer but as different kinds of tests are put to the participants it becomes clear that intelligence can take on many forms, over-looked by the IQ test. These include tests to measure practical intelligence, imaginative thinking, artistic or creative thinking and emotional intelligence. Throughout we hear the opinions of various intelligence researchers, some of whom design the tests the participants take part in. Robert Plomin, geneticist, comments on how surprisingly heredital intelligence is. The end results are surprising with a draw for first place between Seth Lloyd and Bonnie Greer. There is some interesting archive footage relating to IQ testing in Scotland in the 1930s and then follow-up tests more recently

Quantum Logic and Parallel Computing Using Spectral Holeburning Technologies( )

The objective of this project was to investigate the use of spectral holeburning technologies for quantum logic and parallel computing. To this end, we have made substantial progress on both experimental and theoretical fronts. In NV-diamond, we have demonstrated the alignment of spins, which can then be used as quantum bits for a quantum computer. We have performed high resolution imaging of color centers in NV-diamond, as a key step towards isolating and detecting individual quantum bits. We have also developed a detailed model for cavity induced coupling of qubits in this system. Furthermore, we have developed a concrete design for producing a photonic band gap based cavity directly in a diamond substrate. Such a cavity will have the requisite combination of high finesse and low loss necessary for photon-mediated coupling of qubits, which is not possible using bulk mirror cavities because of high surface reflection losses from an embedded crystal. We have also developed a novel model for cavity-induced coupling via the atom-cavity-dark-state, a process that is robust against atomic as well cavity-decay. Finally, we have identified a mechanism for direct dipole-dipole coupling of the qubits as well. This scheme is particularly well suited for creating in parallel many quantum computers, each containing a small number of coupled qubits. Dubbed Type II Quantum Computing, this architecture is expected to outperform the best classical computers in specialized tasks such as modeling turbulence through the cellular automaton based lattice gas dynamics. In Pr:YSO, we have demonstrated a slowing (45 m/sec) and high-fidelity storage and recall of light pulses

The goal of this research was to explore the use of superconducting circuits as components for quantum computing Quantum computers are devices that store information on quantum variables and process that information by making those variables interact in a way that preserves quantum coherence. Typically, these variables consist of two quantum states, and the quantum device is called a quantum bit or qubit Superconducting quantum circuits have been proposed as qubits, in which circulating currents of opposite polarity characterize the two quantum states. Quantum Computing and Optical Memory Using Spectral-Holeburning Techniques( )

The equipment purchased under this DURIP grant has been used in our project for studying spectral hole burning materials for applications to quantum computing as well as optical memory, using spin coherence excited and controlled by two-photon Raman transitions. The key objective was to demonstrate that NV-Diamond color centers, which has a strong oscillator strength, is suitable for this process. Recently, we have observed efficient Raman transitions, which is manifested as electromagnetically induced transparency, in NV-diamond. Specifically, we have observed near perfect alignment of spin-based quantum bits, and performed single-qubit operations on collections of these qubits. The next step is to realize CNOT operations between spectrally adjacent, distinct quantum bits in this material. The robust nature of Raman excited spin transitions in NV diamond also establishes it as a viable candidate for ultra-high-density optical memory. Finally, we have also demonstrated recently that the optically excited spin coherence produces ultra-high non-linearity, resulting in slowing the velocity of light pulses down to 45 m/sec. The equipment obtained under this DURIP has been critical to these observations. in the near future, we will expand on this work as we try to realize a many bit quantum computer, as well as a high-temperature optical memory system based on spectral-hole-burning

A broad, multidisciplinary program has been pursued in the area of quantum computation and information. Principal accomplishments include an experiment to localize atoms within a high quality factor optical cavity for the implementation of quantum logic and the realization of quantum teleportation. Theoretical work has shown how to accomplish quantum computations of arbitrary length reliably, even with error prone quantum gates and memories, and has significantly improved calculations of the required error thresholds. Quantum error correction has been analyzed within the larger framework of quantum feedback control. New types of physical systems have been investigated for quantum computation that would be intrinsically robust to environmental disturbances. Bridges between experiment and theory have been built by way of large-scale simulations of quantum circuits on classical computers, including quantum Monte Carlo techniques. These simulations allow for detailed investigations of the impact of errors and allow for validation of various models of actual physical systems. New algorithms have been developed for simple (few-bit) quantum computers. Diverse 'nonstandard' models for quantum computation have been investigated, including nonlinear quantum mechanics for quantum computation
