Social intrapreneurism and all that jazz : how business innovators are helping to build a more sustainable world by David Grayson( )

11 editions published between 2014 and 2017 in English and held by 808 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In response to the world's rapidly growing social, economic and environmental challenges, a growing wave of "social intrapreneurs" are harnessing the power of large companies to create new business solutions to address societal problems. "Social Intrapreneurism and All That Jazz" reveals how these highly creative social innovators are improvising alliances across, as well as beyond, their companies to: create micro-insurance products for low-income people; offer delivery services to millions of small businesses in slums around the world; develop alternative-energy solutions inside a major gas and oil corporation; partner with a Brazilian community to produce new natural care products; establish a "green" advertising network within a major media company; apply engineering expertise to help alleviate poverty and much more" all while generating commercial value for their companies. Distilling insights from interviews with social intrapreneurs, their colleagues and experts around the world, the authors bring to life how business can be about more than just maximizing profit. They identify the mind-sets, behaviours and skills that have helped successful social intrapreneurs journey from initial idea to roll-out by their company - and some of the pitfalls. They also tell the stories of the intrapreneurs' managers and other colleagues who helped them get there, by providing support in bringing projects to fruition. Perhaps the most important lesson from this book is that, in contrast with the prevailing Western business archetype of the solitary entrepreneurial hero, successful social intrapreneurs do not act alone to achieve success. Although their journeys may be lonely at times and require considerable application while working "against the grain" of large conventional businesses, successful social intrapreneurs are, above all, great communicators who inspire others to join them in achieving a higher purpose beyond the realms of conventional business. Drawing on the metaphors of ensemble jazz music-making, the authors describe how "woodshedding", "jamming", "paying your dues", being a "sideman", joining and building a "band"--But, above all, "listening" to what is happening in business and the wider world"--are all part of the life of a successful social intrapreneurism project. Whether you're an aspiring social intrapreneur who wants to change the world while keeping your day job, or want to renew the entrepreneurial spirit of your own company, this book is for you
Humanism in business by Heiko Spitzeck( )

13 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 682 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"There are many books about business and society, yet very few of them question the primacy of GDP growth, profit maximization, and individual utility maximization. Even developments with a humanistic touch like stakeholder participation, corporate social responsibility, or corporate philanthropy serve the same goal: to foster long-term growth and profitability." "Humanism in Business questions these assumptions and investigates the possibility of creating a human-centered, value-oriented society based on humanistic principles. An international team of academics and practitioners present philosophical, spiritual, economic, psychological, and organizational arguments that show how humanism can be used to understand, and possibly transform, business at three different levels: the systems level, the organizational level, and the individual level." "This book will be of interest to academics, practitioners, and policymakers concerned with business ethics and the relationship between business and society."--Jacket
Banking with integrity : the winners of the financial crisis?( Book )

16 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 287 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Banking with Integrity provides rich and in-depth case studies of banks which were doing well during the financial crisis of 2007-2010. While other banks went bankrupt, were nationalized, or struggled for survival some of the featured cases increased market share, attracted more customers and avoided home evictions of their clients. Banking with Integrity tells the stories of banks which were doing well during the financial crisis of 2007-2010. While other banks went bankrupt, were nationalized, or struggled for survival, some of our featured cases increased their market share, attracted more customers and avoided home evictions of their clients. By looking at the healthier population of financial service firms we explore what in their management approach made these banks 'immune' to the financial crisis. We find that these banks had stronger ties with the society around them contributing both to financial as well as human development. By staying close to clients and stakeholders, involving them in corporate governance mechanisms and exercising strict risk management practices, most of our cases avoided the negative consequences which other banks experienced. Adopting some of the lessons from these banks might serve as a 'vaccine' to avoid the impacts of any future financial turmoil
Talking sustainability in the boardroom by Heiko Spitzeck( )

2 editions published between 2018 and 2019 in English and held by 68 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A Global CEO study by Accenture and the UN Global Compact has shown that 94% of CEOs think that their board should discuss sustainability. And yet there is a real danger that boards are not living up to expectations on sustainability, paying lip-service to the concept rather than fully embedding social and environmental issues into their strategies and operations. Talking Sustainability in the Boardroom sets out why this is the case, identifies the obstacles, and then explains the opportunities for the long-term performance of the organisation that can arise through focusing on social and environmental issues. Written by two leading specialists in sustainability who have significant experience of working directly with boards, this book presents a very practical framework for embedding sustainability into board conversations and strategies. Steps include identifying and prioritising the social and environmental issues that are most pertinent to the organisation and will have the biggest impact on business, presenting the competences and skills to enable this, guidance on how to structure board meetings to ensure that these conversations truly take place, and the development of action plans and tools for measurement

Social intrapreneurship at Natura by Elisa de Resende Alt( )

3 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract : Subject area: – Innovation and Intrapreneurship. Study level/applicability: – MSc, MBA and Executive Education Programmes. Case overview: – The case on Priscila Matta focuses on the role of social intrapreneurship and social inclusion at Natura, the largest cosmetics company in Brazil and a corporate responsibility leader. Centred in the complexity stemming from dealing with a local community which supplies key ingredients to the Ekos product line, the company's most prominent and innovative brand, it illustrates the difficulties of establishing inclusive forms of business with a traditional community in the northeast of Brazil. Ekos builds on the rich Brazilian biodiversity and traditional knowledge. Brazilian law requires Natura to share the benefits obtained from the access to genetic heritage and associated traditional knowledge with those communities who supply such resources. Implicitly, the case focuses on the role of the social intrapreneur – Priscila Matta – and how she navigated corporate politics to structure the company's community relations. The case demonstrates the difficulties of social intrapreneurs who aim to create sustainable innovations to execute shared value strategies. Expected learning outcomes: – The case has the following four learning objectives: to illustrate best practices in intrapreneurial activities that aim to create shared value – in this case, value for Natura and for the community; to define the role and characteristics of social intrapreneurs – people inside big corporations who drive sustainable innovation; to discuss obstacles the corporate environment presents in the process of social innovation; and to illustrate how individuals within companies can implement a shared value strategy. Supplementary materials: – Teaching Notes are available for educators only. Please contact your library to gain login details or emailsupport@emeraldinsight.com to request teaching notes.
