When Mark Dintenfass arrived in Fort Lee in 1910, the sleepy New Jersey town just a ferry ride away from Manhattan was already a favorite location for nickelodeon-era filmmakers. Why not, he reasoned, build a studio and save on the expense and hassle of travel across the Hudson? Purchasing land and a building in nearby Englewood Cliffs, Dintenfass founded the Champion Studios, where he produced silent westerns and Civil War epics. Others followed, and soon there were movie studios all over Fort Lee. Sadly, the land rush proved to be a bubble that burst when the American film industry moved west to Hollywood. Based on Richard Koszarski's book, Fort Lee, the Film Town, The Champion tells the story of that brief golden age and of a modern-day fight to save the era's last remaining studio - reminding us that the preservation of cinema history involves more than just the restoration of the films themselves

Les méthodes de stéréovision sont utilisées pour la reconstruction tridimensionnelle d'une scène. Le travail présenté dans ce mémoire concerne l'étude et le développement de méthodes de stéréovision pouvant être implantées sur des architectures spécialisées de calcul afin de traiter les images en temps-réel. Nous avons étudié plus spécifiquement les méthodes basées sur la corrélation entre des fenêtres extraites des deux images. Le principal problème posé par ces méthodes réside dans le choix de la taille et de la forme de la fenêtre de corrélation. Une petite fenêtre est nécessaire afin de traiter correctement les petits objets, mais elle ne fournit pas de résultats exploitables dans les zones homogènes des images. A l'inverse, une grande fenêtre permet de traiter les zones homogènes, mais les petits objets sont supprimés des images résultat. Pour pallier ce problème, nous proposons une nouvelle méthode adaptative qui peut être implantée sur une architecture dédiée de calcul. La corrélation est calculée sur une grande fenêtre, mais certains pixels sont exclus lors du traitement. Seuls les pixels "semblables" au pixel à apparier sont conservés dans l'expression de la corrélation, ce qui équivaut à changer la taille et la forme de la fenêtre. Plusieurs critères de similarité sont proposés et comparés. Nous avons montré que, même en utilisant de critères de similarité extrèmement simples, les résultats obtenus avec notre algorithme sont de meilleure qualité que ceux obtenus par les algorithmes similaires décrits dans la littérature. L'algorithme a été implanté dans une architecture intégrant un FPGA, le processeur STREAM. Nous présentons également une utilisation de notre algorithme dans le cadre de la détection d'obstacles en temps-réel à l'avant d'un véhicule

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is the problem of constructing a 3D map while simultaneously keeping track of an agent location within the map. In recent years, work has focused on systems that use a single moving camera as the only sensing mechanism (monocular-SLAM). This choice was motivated because nowadays, it is possible to find inexpensive commercial cameras, smaller and lighter than other sensors previously used and, they provide visual environmental information that can be exploited to create complex 3D maps while camera poses can be simultaneously estimated. Unfortunately, previous monocular-SLAM systems are based on optimization techniques that limits the performance for real-time embedded applications. To solve this problem, in this work, we propose a new monocular SLAM formulation based on the hypothesis that it is possible to reach high efficiency for embedded applications, increasing the density of the point cloud map (and therefore, the 3D map density and the overall positioning and mapping) by reformulating the feature-tracking/feature-matching process to achieve high performance for embedded hardware architectures, such as FPGA or CUDA. In order to increase the point cloud map density, we propose new feature-tracking/feature-matching and depth-from-motion algorithms that consists of extensions of the stereo matching problem. Then, two different hardware architectures (based on FPGA and CUDA, respectively) fully compliant for real-time embedded applications are presented. Experimental results show that it is possible to obtain accurate camera pose estimations. Compared to previous monocular systems, we are ranked as the 5th place in the KITTI benchmark suite, with a higher processing speed (we are the fastest algorithm in the benchmark) and more than x10 the density of the point cloud from previous approaches
