The government finally relents and recognizing rights for Indians. Gandhi goes back to India, where he is now considered something of a national hero. He is urged to take up the fight for India's independence from the British Empire. Gandhi agrees, and mounts a non-violent campaign of unprecedented scale. The campaign generates great attention and the Britain face intense public pressure. Weaken from World War II, the Britain finally grant India's independence. Religious tensions between Hindus and Muslims erupt into nationwide violence. Gandhi declares a hunger strike, saying he will not eat until the fighting stops. Pakistan is created for the Muslims and it is hoped that the violence will abate. Gandhi is opposed to the idea. Gandhi spends his last days trying to bring about peace between both nations. He angers many dissidents on both sides, one of whom finally gets close enough to assassinate him

A poor Bengali family survives in a village but wider horizons tempt the father. The protection of family members' reputations, the relationship of the family group to an elderly 'aunt', and first confrontations with death contribute to the early development of the boy Apu. His father's dreams prevail over the objections of his mother so that at the end of the film the family moves to the big city of Benares. Apu's experiences are followed in the second film of the trilogy: Aparajito" and his growth to early manhood in the final film "Apur Sansar."
