In his criticism of existing educational institutions, the author calls for a reform not only of educational institutions, but also of the underlying presumptions of society about the purpose and value of education in general. He explores alternatives to formal schooling, examines the assumption on which our system of universal compulsory schooling is grounded, and offers a variety of educational experiments to remedy the faults he finds. He suggests that in order to give the student the widest and freest possible choice to learn whatever he or she wants to learn, not only open schools and free schools are necessary, but also community learning centers accessible to young and old, flexible school days and school years, and systems of "deschooled" learning networks like those suggested by Ivan Illich. Much of the book is devoted to discussing why the present system of education has had so little success in reaching poor and minority students. (Jy)

How children learn by John Caldwell Holt( )

4 editions published between 1982 and 2017 in English and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Fifty years ago John Holt woke the dreary world of educational theory by showing that for small children "learning is as natural as breathing." His brilliant observations are as true today as they were then. Over 1 million copies were sold worldwide in the decades that followed. Today the theorists are still squabbling, and Holt's wisdom is needed more than ever. As a hero of progressive education and homeschoolers, his time has come again. A new foreword by eminent school reformer Deborah Meier, of the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development reveals the lasting influence of John Holt's ideas and their relevance for the students today
