Sir John Frederick William Herschel (1792–1871) – astronomer, mathematician, chemist – was one of the most important English scientists of the nineteenth century. Son of the famous astronomer William Herschel and nephew of Caroline, he was persuaded by his father to pursue the astronomical investigations William could no longer undertake; John's subsequent career resulted in a knighthood and a lifetime of accolades. Outlines of Astronomy (1849), an updated and expanded version of his 1833 Treatise on Astronomy, went through eleven editions in two decades and was translated into several languages. Outlines examines terrestrial and celestial phenomena, providing the reader with a wide range of knowledge about the physical world as a whole. The work is an important textbook, the object of which 'is not to convince or refute opponents, nor to inquire … for principles of which we are all the time in full possession – but simply to teach what is known'

Astronomer and philosopher Sir John Herschel (1792–1871), the son of William and the nephew of Caroline, published his 1833 Treatise on Astronomy in the 'Cabinet Cyclopaedia' series of which the first volume had been his enormously successful Preliminary Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy. He is regarded as the founder of the philosophy of science, and made contributions in many fields including mathematics, the newly discovered process of photography, and the botany of southern Africa, which he studied while making astronomical observations of the southern hemisphere, and where he was visited by Darwin and Fitzroy on the Beagle voyage. It was however as the natural successor to his father's astronomical studies that he is best remembered, and this book, which is written for the interested lay person, places strong emphasis on the importance of accurate observation and on avoiding preconceptions or hypotheses not based on such observation

First published in 1857, this work comprises assorted noteworthy writings by the mathematician and astronomer Sir John Herschel (1792–1871), reflecting his diverse scientific and literary interests. It includes a piece on terrestrial magnetism, a review of William Whewell's writings on the history and philosophy of science, and several addresses to the Royal Astronomical Society. Of particular interest is Herschel's commentary on Adolphe Quetelet's work on probability, which advocated applying statistics and probability calculus to social and political questions. Herschel's article not only influenced the growth of social science in Britain, but also played an important role in James Clerk Maxwell's development of a statistical treatment of heat phenomena. Also included in this collection are Herschel's translations of poems by Schiller (accompanied by the original German) as well as examples of his own verse. John Frederick William Herschel (1792-1871) played a key role in the creation of the Astronomical Society, and during the 1820’s he began to emerge as Britain’s first modern physical scientist and wrote many important books. He spent the years 1833 to 1838 at the Cape of Good Hope where he made significant discoveries at Britain’s Royal Observatory on the Cape. On his return to England aboard the Windsor Castle, a dinner was given in his honour attended by 400 fellow-scientists and other notables. Within two weeks he had been elevated to the baronetcy at the coronation of Queen Victoria and was hailed as the most eminent scientist in Britain. In 1849 he had published the first edition of this Admiralty Manual of Scientific Enquiry for naval officers, followed by the second edition in 1851. Further editions followed. Here he deals with Astronomy, Botany, Geography and Hydrography, Geology, Mineralogy, Magnetism, Meteorology, Statistics, Tides and Zoology. At time of publication the Admiralty were sending a surveying vessel to New Zealand, and others were already employed in the Torres Straight and in other parts of the world. A new establishment was under consideration for Borneo, and expeditions proposed to go in search of Sir John Franklin. The Navy had cruisers in every sea, and merchantmen were in some cases assisting in the gathering of intelligence and in scientific observations

Herschel's classic paper contains the first use of the terms "positive" and "negative" in connection with photography, as well as a detailed account of the use of hyposulfite of soda as a fixative, his observation of the superior light-sensitivity of bromide of silver, a description of his first experiments with photography in solar spectroscopy, his process (anticipating Bayard) for obtaining direct positive proofs on paper, the necessity of using achromatic lenses for correct delineation, etc. Herschel's paper represents "a densely packed comprehensive summary" (Schaaf, Out of the shadows, p. 94) of the intensive researches in photography that had occupied him during 1839 and 1840, when he and his friend Henry Fox Talbot were striving to steal a march on Daguerre and the French by perfecting the process of making and fixing photographic images on paper that Talbot had begun developing some seven years before

Astronomer and philosopher J. F. W. Herschel's A Preliminary Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy, originally published in 1830, can be regarded as the first modern work on the philosophy of science. In this book, Herschel carefully sets out what he regards as the principles and methods of scientific investigation, both at a theoretical level and at the level of experiment or observation. He describes nature as being governed by laws which are difficult to discern by mere observation and so deduces that theoretical science requires analogical reasoning. In the Discourses, written as the first in a series called Cabinet Cyclopaedia, he covers a wide range of methodological, scientific and philosophical subjects that include discussions of contemporary astronomy, atomism and chemistry. His writing on light is heavily influenced by Newton. Herschel also ponders the differences between human beings and animals and the relationship between religious faith and scientific enquiry

As part of their campaign to introduce the continental notation into Great Britain, Babbage and his friends Herschel and Peacock translated and published S. F. Lacroix's Sur le calcul differentiel et integral (1802). Babbage had begun the task of translation while still at Cambridge, but for one reason or another set it aside uncompleted. "A few years later Peacock called on me in Devonshire Street, and stated that both Herschel and himself were convinced that the change from the dots to the d's would not be accomplished until some foreign work of eminence should be translated into English. Peacock then proposed that I should either finish the translation which I had commenced, or that Herschel and himself should complete the remainder of my translation. I suggested that we should toss up which alternative to take. It was determined by lot that we should make a joint translation." Some months after, the translation of the small work of Lacroix was published (Babbage 1864, 39). Part I of Lacroix's work, on differential calculus, was translated by Babbage; Part II, on integral calculus, was translated jointly by Peacock and Herschel. The "Appendix" was written by Herschel, and he and Peacock collaborated on the notes. Acceptance of the new notation was slow at first, but by 1820 the d-notation had triumphed at Cambridge, largely due to the support and influence of William Whewell, the future dean of Trinity College
