Samuel Palmer, 1805-1881 : vision and landscape by William Vaughan( Book )

9 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 490 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Samuel Palmer (1805-81) is one of the most original and influential of British painters. A younger contemporary of Turner and Constable, he looked at nature as much with the inner as with the outer eye, producing vision-inspired landscapes of unprecedented boldness and great poetic richness that form a striking contrast to the dominating naturalism of the day." "Marking the bicentenary of Palmer's birth, this catalogue is published to accompany the largest retrospective exhibition of his work for nearly eighty years. Bringing together nearly all his greatest works from collections around the world, supplemented with essays by eight distinguished scholars, it celebrates the full range of the artist's achievement."--Jacket

Pictures from Italy by Charles Dickens( Book )

7 editions published between 1846 and 2001 in English and held by 167 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1844 Charles Dickens (1812-70) and his family moved to Italy for a year, eventually settling in Genoa. This book, Dickens' second travel memoir, describes his experience of travelling through France and exploring Italy. Based on letters to friends, particularly John Forster, it was first published in instalments from January to March 1846 in the Daily News (a new radical newspaper which Dickens himself founded and briefly edited). The edition in book form reissued here appeared in May 1846. The main focus of the book is the northern regions of Italy, including Tuscany, Milan and Venice. It also includes substantial sections on Rome and Naples as well as a brief sketch of Switzerland. Landscapes, architecture, lodgings and food are described with selective but penetrating detail. The shrewd social observations characteristic of Dickens' novels are found here, especially in his critical remarks about poverty, popular religion and the Catholic clergy." --Publisher description

Samuel Palmer revisited by Simon Shaw-Miller( Book )

4 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 117 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Varied and deliberately diverse, this group of essays provides a reassessment of the life and work of the popular nineteenth-century artist Samuel Palmer. While scholarly publications have been published recently which reassess Palmer's achievement, those works primarily consider the artist in isolation. This volume examines his work in relation to a wider art world and analyses areas of his life and output that have until now received little attention, reinstating the study of Palmer's work within broader debates about landscape and cultural history. In Samuel Palmer Revisited, the contributors provide a fresh perspective on Palmer's work, its context and its influence."--Provided by publisher
