"In this new edition the authors have taken the opportunity to bring the work completely up to date by the addition of new material on mesoporous materials, fullerenes, molecular magnets, organic conductors and high-temperature superconductors. All of the chapters have been revised with new additional sections." "In recent years, solid state chemistry has emerged as a very important element of mainstream chemistry and modern materials science. Students, teachers and researchers of condensed matter science and materials science need to understand the chemistry of solids because this plays a crucial role in determining the properties of materials. An understanding of solid state chemistry is also essential in materials design. For example, innovative ways of preparing unusual solids chemically have been discovered, often giving rise to metastable materials which could not otherwise be made. Many fascinating relationships between the structure and properties of solids that help in the design of materials have been discovered by chemists. The authors survey the highlights of this vital area of chemistry by citing the most recent examples, case studies and references. Not only does the book bring out the essence of the subject, it will also help the reader understand the subject in all its breadth and depth." "This text requires only an understanding of basic physics, chemistry and crystallography. It will be of value to advanced students and researchers studying solid state chemistry as a text and reference work."--Jacket

Modern aspects of solid state chemistry by C. N. R Rao( Book )

16 editions published between 1970 and 1988 in English and held by 292 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The three natural streams of present-day chemistry are Structure, Dynamics and Synthesis and all these three elements are essential for the study of materials, particularly in the solid state. The solid state provides challenging opportunities for illustrating and applying principles of chemistry to systems of academic interest and technological importance. There are several practising solid state chemists in universities and research laboratories, but the subject has not yet become part of the formal training program in chemistry. Being one of the new frontiers of chemistry, Solid State Chemistry has a tremendous future and undoubtedly demands the active involvement of many more chemists. A Winter School in Solid State Chemistry was organized at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, to promote this area and to develop curricular material. Solid State Chemistry being lighly interdisciplinary in nature, the lecturers and participants at the Winter School had widely different backgrounds and interests. It was my great desire that the lecture material from the Winter School should become available to a larger body of students, teachers and research workers interested in the solid state and hence this volume
Solid-state chemistry by N. B Hannay( Book )

Solid State Chemistry today is a frontier area of mainstream chemistry, and plays a vital role in the development of materials. The present work, consisting of a selection of Prof. C N R Rao's papers, covers most of the important aspects of solid state chemistry and provides the flavour of the subject, showing how the subject has evolved over the years. The book is up-to-date, and will be useful to students, teachers, beginning researchers and practitioners in solid state chemistry as well as in the broader area of materials science
Supramolecular organization and materials design( Book )

11 editions published between 2001 and 2008 in English and held by 264 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Supramolecular chemistry deals with the design, synthesis, and study of molecular structures held together by non-covalent interactions. Structures of this type are ubiquitous in nature and are frequently used as blueprints for the design of synthetic equivalents. This reference demonstrates the seminal importance of supramolecular chemistry and self-organization in the design and synthesis of novel organic materials, inorganic materials, and biomaterials. The book shows how the bottom-up approach of supramolecular chemistry can be used not only to synthesize new materials, but to operate specific molecular devices as well

"In this collection, the author has compiled a set of his papers representing some of the highlights of materials chemistry. It features a section on oxidic materials, which includes high-temperature superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, electronic phase separation and multiferroics. The author has also included novel methods for making gallium nitride, boron nitride and such materials, by using precursors and the urea decomposition route. Moreover, there is a section dealing with open-framework and hybrid materials of which the latter has a great future since one can make use of the rigidity of inorganic structures and the functionality and flexibility of the organic residues to design materials with novel properties."--Jacket
