Technique & personality by Margaret Mead( Book )

8 editions published between 1963 and 1968 in English and held by 540 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this book three distinguished scholars discuss a problem basic to the understanding of primitive art: the relation of the traditional techniques of an art to the development of style and the expression of the individual artist. Margaret Mead writes of the Mountain Arapesh of New Guinea, and how a people 'who have no distinctive style of decoration' appropriate and adopt the work of their neighbors. She documents and illustrates the making of a bark painting 'tracing the actual steps, the shifts and changes of plan between the painter and his helper.' Junius B. Bird studies the techniques of Peruvian textiles and analyzes 'the many and varied ways in which fabrics can be created' and how 'each technique is a medium in itself, providing a challenge to the ingenuity, imagination, and skill of the artist', whose influence may extend beyond textiles to other media where such controls do not exist. Hans Himmelheber describes the methods and intentions of African sculptors in general, and how they vary from tribe to tribe. He then follows in detail the working methods of three invidiaul artists of the Dan and Kran in Liberia, pointing out the differing reasons for which they work and how each has developed his own method and manner of expression. These three papers, constituting the third volume in the lecture series of The Museum of Primitive Art, are illustrated by many photographs and drawings"--Publisher's description, p. Where the echo began : and other oral traditions from southwestern Alaska by Hans Himmelheber( Book )

10 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and held by 246 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this book, the Native people of southwestern Alaska generously share the traditional stories that form the expressive core of their unique culture. The lifeways observed by a then-young university graduate, who recorded and compiled them in communities on Nunivak Island and the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, offer a glimpse today of a longstanding way of life." "Though much has changed in the last half century, Yup'ik and Cup'ig orators continue to tell stories to educate and amuse their listeners. With this English translation, Himmelheber has passed on what he learned to Native and non-Native readers alike."--Jacket
Eskimo artists : fieldwork in Alaska, June 1936 until April 1937 by Hans Himmelheber( Book )

13 editions published between 1987 and 1993 in English and held by 217 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hans Himmelheber describes the cultural and artistic heritage of the Yup'ik in southwestern Alaska during the late 1930s. His work is remarkable because he emphasized drawing, carving, and painting as part of a narrative process instead of focusing on Yup'ik art as artifacts. "Eskimo Artists" is rich in examples attributed to named orators, and interpretation is kept to a minimum. Himmelheber includes family histories, daily and ceremonial activities of the men and women he met, and their opinions about artistic expression. "

Guro : masks, performances, and master carvers in Ivory Coast by Eberhard Fischer( Book )

3 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 165 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Based primarily on the author's own fieldwork, this book provides an understanding of the artistic life of the Guro people, placing special emphasis on their masks. It furnishes a taxonomy of mask types - sacred, semi-sacred, and entertainment - and presents in-depth profiles of the historically important Guro mask carvers. The process of creating a mask is also thoroughly described, often in the words of the Guro artists themselves." "With over 500 photographs of masterpieces as well as of mask performances and artists in their workshops, this thoughtful and detailed work honors the artistic achievements of the Guro people and serves as an invaluable record for future generations."--book jacket
