An American exodus : a record of human erosion by
Dorothea Lange(
Book
)
28 editions published between 1939 and 2000 in 3 languages and held by 725 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
First published in 1939, An American Exodus is one of the masterpieces of the documentary genre. Produced by incomparable documentary photographer Dorothea Lange with text by her husband, Paul Taylor, An American Exodus was taken in the early 1930s while the couple were working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) The book documents the rural poverty of the depression-era exodus that brought over 300,000 migrants to California in search of farmwork, a westward mass migration driven by economic deprivation as opposed to the Manifest Destiny of 19th century pioneers. This facsimile edition of the original volume reintroduces this sought-after work of art -- a pioneering book that was among the first to combine photographs with oral testimony -- to a contemporary audience, providing an insight into the struggles of the Depression as well as offering a profound and timeless look at the human condition

Exodus from the land is not new. Since the Middle Ages in Europe an unending stream of rural folk has fed the growth of cities and furnished manpower for rising manufactures. In America throughout our national history people have migrated in a double stream. One current, itself a part of the 500-year old stream of Europe, has drawn off surplus population from land already settled in order to urbanize and industrialize the United States. The other current, described a century ago by the Frenchman de Toqueville, has moved steadily westward with "the solemnity of a providential event... like a deluge of men rising unabatedly, and daily driven onward by the hand of Gof." Its goal was a piece of unoccupied domain for each family to assute a living through tillage of the soil. The generation of our fathers saw the end of the wester frontier of free land. And it is now a full decade since the doors of our factories were open wide to boys from the farms. Indeed, in the face of industrial collapse in 1929 millions of Americans sought refuge in recoil to the land from which they had sprung... Now our people are leaving the soil again. They are being expelled by powerful forces of mans and of Nature. They crowd into cities and towns near the plantations. Once more great numbers of landseekers thek west. This contemporary exodus is our theme. It attains its most dramatic form on the deltas, the prairies, and the plains of the South, and in the tide of people which moves to the Pacific Coast. But this time the cities and tows are already burdened with unemployed, and opportunity upon the land is sharply restricted
