Brazilian literature, an outline by Erico Veríssimo( Book )

This is a very sketchy history of Brazilian literature, and undoubtedly a defective one. My main objective in writing it was to give the American reader an idea of the march of literature in my own country, from the day it was discovered up to the present year ... I must make one point clear. These pages were originally written to be read as a series of public lectures I delivered in January and February, 1944, at the University of California, Berkeley, and as I did not wish the audience to fall asleep, rocked by the singsong of my voice, while I was repeating monotonously authors' names and book titles in a language strange to them, once in a while I told them a story or anecdote of some famous novel, short story, or poem of Brazilian literature. So, many of the passages I quote in this book were not chosen because they are the most representative of their authors or times, but only because they make good yarns or pleasant reading. The reader will certainly understand my point better if I tell him that I am not a critic, but a storyteller. -- from Foreword (p. vii)

"Consider the lilies of the field" [is] about a man that wants to get rid of the poverty of his infancy by leaving everything and everyone behind as he scales the ladder of power and fame as an important doctor. However, the past hits him back when the woman he loved in the past dies, leaving him with their child and many doubts about her, and what they once felt for one another. And this is just the beginning of his misadventures in the South of Brazil before WWII. --Anna Carolina Fagundes at Amazon.com

Night by Erico Veríssimo( Book )

65 editions published between 1954 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 393 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This novel describes the terrifying experience of a Brazilian man who, in a shocked condition, has lost his identity. Not knowing who he is or where he comes from, he is obsessed with the fear that he may have committed some crime, perhaps even murder. He is a stranger even to himself. In a single night of horror, he wanders through the streets of an unrecognized city guided by a sadistic hunchback and another man, called The Master. In the hands of these two concentrations of evil and dominated by them, he is forced to join their revelries. A mysterious figure in white, radiant and tranquil, haunts his steps and beckons to him. The stranger yearns to follow but finds himself powerless to resist the diabolic forces which impel him through this period of darkness. At last, as day dawns, memory returns and he escapes from his imprisonment. This is an intense psychological study quite out of the ordinary, and a story of stark realism possessing impressive narrative power

"This book tells the story of the politcal and intellectual adventures of EP Thompson, one of Britain's foremost twentieth-century thinkers. Drawing on extrodinary new unpublished documents, Scott Hamilton shows that all of Thompson's work, from his acclaimed histories to his voluminous political writings to his littel-noticed poetry, was inspired by the same passionate and idiosyncratic vision of the world. In a narrative that moves from the battlefields of Spian and Italy to the coal towns of Yorkshire to the bloody chaos of Emergency India, Hamilton present Thompson as a man determined to fin an alternative, in though and in actio, to the ideolofies of Stalinism and right-wing 'Natopolotanism' that together dominated the postwar world...This book will appeal to scholars and general readers with an interest in left-wing politics and theory, British societym twentith-century history, modernist poetry and the philosphy of history" --P [4] of jacket
