Dynamics of regional politics : four systems on the Indian ocean rim by W. Howard Wriggins( Book )

8 editions published between 1992 and 1994 in English and held by 365 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Dynamics of Regional Politics explores the patterns of international conflict and cooperation in four geographical subsystems: the Horn of Africa, the Persian/Arabian Gulf, the South Asian subcontinent, and Southeast Asia. All were theaters of Cold War rivalry, and coping with numerous regional conflicts will be part of any future international order. Wriggins argues that to understand how the end of the Cold War will affect these areas, it is necessary to look closely at their individual dynamics over time in order to differentiate characteristics intrinsic to the regions from those created by the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union." "The book is structured to test hypotheses about international alignment and conflict across a number of Third World cases. It highlights areas where Third World realities--arbitrary colonial borders, weak state structures, civil conflict, ethnic/sectarian/tribal ties across frontiers--produce international outcomes different from those predicted by standard theories generated from European and North American cases." "The introductory chapter sets out these hypotheses, which organize the presentation of the subsequent case study chapters. Each case study is written by a distinguished regional specialist, who presents a rich, in-depth analysis of the areas in a format that invites comparison across regions. In his conclusion, Wriggins relates the evidence from the cases back to the original hypotheses, drawing inferences about how Third World states deal with one another and the outside world." "Dynamics of Regional Politics is recommended for those interested in or specializing in comparative foreign policy, international politics in the Third World, and international security."--Jacket

The appeals of communism by Gabriel A Almond( )

5 editions published between 1954 and 1965 in English and held by 38 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study, based on an extensive program of interviewing former American, British, French, and Italian Communists, provides many answers to these questions and gives a convincing insight into the motivations, tensions, and loyalties of Party members. First, the book examines Communist literature (the Lenin and Stalin classics and current Party media) to see what the Communists themselves expect of their movement. Then it shows whether this ideal is realized by the people who have "been through it." The final sections, which follow the interviews closely, reveal what actually happens to people when they join, while they are in the Party, and after they leave. Originally published in 1954. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905
Pakistan's search for a foreign policy after the invasion of Afghanistan by W. Howard Wriggins( Book )

5 editions published between 1983 and 1984 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This essay seeks to reconstruct Pakistan governmental perceptions of its foreign policy situation following the Soviet invasion. Necessarily speculative, it considers Pakistan's bill of constraints and limited options as Islamabad sought to define a response to the Soviet invasion that best served its interests. Its actions have often seemed to American observers half-hearted. But it can be argued that the government's policy of limited liability made the most of a much worsened security situation, which at the outset its neighbors did little to improve
