Local analytic geometry by
Shreeram Shankar Abhyankar(
)
3 editions published between 1964 and 2001 in English and Italian and held by 1,421 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book provides, for use in a graduate course or for selfstudy by graduate students, a wellmotivated treatment of several topics, especially the following: algebraic treatment of several complex variables; geometric approach to algebraic geometry via analytic sets; survey of local algebra; and survey of sheaf theory. The book has been written in the spirit of Weierstrass. Power series play the dominant role. The treatment, being algebraic, is not restricted to complex numbers, but remains valid over any completevalued field. This makes it applicable to situations arising from number theory. When it is specialized to the complex case, connectivity and other topological properties come to the fore. In particular, via singularities of analytic sets, topological fundamental groups can be studied. In the transition from punctual to local, ie. from properties at a point to properties near a point, the classical work of Osgood plays an important role. This gives rise to normic forms and the concept of the Osgoodian. Following Serre, the passage from local to global properties of analytic spaces is facilitated by introducing sheaf theory. Here the fundamental results are the coherence theorems of Oka and Cartan. They are followed by theory normalization due to Oka and Zariski in the analytic and algebraic cases, respectively

)
25 editions published between 1966 and 2014 in English and Italian and held by 892 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book pays modest tribute to "Reduction of Singularities of Algebraic Threedimensional Varieties" by Oscar Zariski, in the form of an exposition of it, while extending some of the results to nonzero characteristic. It also addresses global resolution, global principalization, dominance, birational invariance, uniformization, and birational resolution

Lectures on algebra by

11 editions published in 2006 in English and Undetermined and held by 844 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is a timely survey of much of the algebra developed during the last several centuries including its applications to algebraic geometry and its potential use in geometric modeling. The present volume makes an ideal textbook for an abstract algebra course, while the forthcoming sequel, Lectures on Algebra II, will serve as a textbook for a linear algebra course. The author's fondness for algebraic geometry shows up in both volumes, and his recent preoccupation with the applications of group theory to the calculation of Galois groups is evident in the second volume which contains more lo

7 editions published in 1995 in English and French and held by 108 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This volume consists of a collection of articles based on lectures delivered in an International Colloquium held at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay in January 1992. Prof. M. S. Narasimhan and Prof. C. S. Seshadri turned sixty about that time and in view of the crucial role they played in the evolution of the School of Mathematics of the Tata Institute as one of the major centres of mathematical activity in the world, the occasion was used to felicitate them and to focus on questions close to their interests. Experts from all over the world spoke at the conference on different aspects of geometry and analysis."BOOK JACKET

Algebraic surfaces by
Oscar Zariski(
Book
)
7 editions published in 1971 in 3 languages and held by 53 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The aim of the present monograph is to give a systematic exposition of the theory of algebraic surfaces emphasizing the interrelations between the various aspects of the theory: algebrogeometric, topological and transcendental. To achieve this aim, and still remain inside the limits of the allotted space, it was necessary to confine the exposition to topics which are absolutely fundamental. The present work therefore makes no claim to completeness, but it does, however, cover most of the central points of the theory. A presentation of the theory of surfaces, to be effective at all, must above all give the typical methods of proof used in the theory and their underlying ideas. It is especially true of algebraic geometry that in this domain the methods employed are at least as important as the results. The author has therefore avoided, as much as possible, purely formal accounts of results. The proofs given are of necessity condensed, for reasons of space, but no attempt has been made to condense them beyond the point of intelligibility. In many instances, due to exigencies of simplicity and rigor, the proofs given in the text differ, to a greater or less extent, from the proofs given in the original papers
