Queen Victoria and Thomas Sully by Carrie Rebora Barratt( Book )

6 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 377 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Queen Victoria and Thomas Sully tells the story of the artist's complex and challenging sojourn abroad, in which he spent five months waiting for a sitting with Her Majesty. He kept expectations in check as he navigated his way through the corridors of British protocol and power, biding time by becoming an active participant in London's lively art scene. By drawing upon Victoria's and Sully's journals as well as contemporary letters, Carrie Barratt deftly arrives at exactly how Sully achieved his stunning portrait of Victoria, which took great liberties with conventions of state portraiture and was quickly acclaimed as a masterpiece." "This illustrated volume, which accompanies an exhibition originating at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and traveling to The Wallace Collection in London, illuminates not only the creation of this painting but the competitive process of making portraits in order to advance political power. Barratt includes an edited version of Sully's engrossing journal, the diary of a highly articulate and entrepreneurial American in London with his twenty-one-year-old daughter during the exciting coronation year. Both the exhibition and the book have been undertaken at this time to commemorate the anniversary of Queen Victoria's death in January 1901 - an event sure to garner considerable attention on both sides of the Atlantic."--Jacket
François Boucher : seductive visions by Jo Hedley( Book )

8 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 222 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The first monograph to appear on the eighteenth-century French artist, Francois Boucher, for nearly twenty years, this illustrated book charts his spectacular rise from poverty to the position of First Painter to King Louis XV. It provides a detailed account of his stylistic development and, by setting it within the historical and cultural context of its day, provides fresh new insights into Boucher's artistic achievement. Boucher's output as a painter, draughtsman, printmaker, tapestry designer and source of inspiration for the decorative arts are all examined, helping to explain his position as the presiding visual genius of eighteenth-century France. Boucher's artistic legacy is also analysed, demonstrating how the mythology surrounding the painter's allegedly libidinous private life has continued to undermine serious consideration of his work up to the present day. Special consideration is given to Boucher's paintings in the Wallace Collection, and the book includes an essay on the collection's Boucher-inspired decorative arts written by its Director, Rosalind Savill."--Jacket
Xanto : pottery-painter, poet, man of the Italian Renaissance by J. V. G Mallet( Book )

9 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 219 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Francesco Xanto Avelli da Rovigo (c. 1486-c.1542) painted some of the most beautiful and fascinating ceramics produced in Renaissance Italy, often drawing on classical mythology for his subjects. He was also a poet, and commented on the tempestuous events of his time--including the infamous Sack of Rome in 1527--both in verse and allegorically in the imagery of the dishes and plates he decorated. This book is a comprehensive study of Xanto as a remarkable painter of Italian Renaissance tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica) decorated with narrative subjects (istoriato), a poet and a loyal follower of the condottiere Francesco Maria I della Rovere, Duke of Urbino. It contains a full transcription of his sonnets with a parallel English translation. A list of maiolica by or attributable to Xanto is another first. Through his ceramics, beautiful and interesting in themselves, and here superbly reproduced, it provides an enlightening cross-section of the dawn of the early modern era"--Provided by publisher

Boucher & Chardin : masters of modern manners by The Hunterian (Glasgow)( Book )

4 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book accompanies an exhibition examining the relationships between two works. When seen within the context of contemporary depictions of modish women and fashionable interiors, Boucher and Chardin's paintings acquire a new resonance, showing the rise of a new manner in French genre painting. This provides an opportunity to address undercurrent themes of social history such as the artists' attitudes to fashion, interior decoration and the consumption of tea - a pastime influenced by new trade links with China."--Jacket

Pomp and power : French drawings from Versailles by Xavier Salmon( Book )

8 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This lavish and beautiful book illustrates and discusses 52 French drawings dating from the late 17th to the early 19th century, all from the extraordinary collection Chateau de Versailles. Together the drawings tell the story of the major buildings at Versailles, its gardens, the court, and the personalities associated with the palace of Louis XIV and later French kings. Among the artists represented are many of the major figures of this magnificent period of French art, including Le Brun, Lemoine, Cochin, Claude-Joseph, Horace Vernet, Jean-Baptiste Isabey, Paul Delaroche, and Jacques-Louis David, whose splendid compositional study for his Oath of the Tennis Court, the event that marked the beginning of the French Revolution, is of particular interest"--Publisher
The Wallace Collection's pictures : a complete catalogue by Stephen Duffy( Book )

4 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 175 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Wallace Collection opened to the public as a national museum in 1900. It has acted as a catalyst for enthusiastic collectors and provided a rich source of research for art historians. The pictures in particular have long been regarded not only as one of the most important collections in the world, but also as one of the best loved." "Collected between the 1780s and the 1880s by successive generations of the Marquesses of Hertford and the 4th Marquess's illegitimate son, Sir Richard Wallace, the picture collection exhibits a unique character of leisured opulence seasoned with an exquisite sensuality. Today there are 775 paintings, drawings and watercolours to be seen at Hertfeld House, including some of the most famous images of European art such as Hals's The Laughing Cavalier and Fragonard's The Swing. In England the Wallace Colection's array of Old Master paintings is surpassed only by those in the National Gallery and the Royal Collection, while the collections of French painting of the eighteenth century and the period 1820-60 are rivalled only by the greatest collections in France and Russia." "Here, for the first time in the Collection's history, all its pictures are reproduced together in colour, with the latest information concerning their attribution. In addition, insight is afforded into the collecting history and motivations of the Seymour-Conway family who amassed one of the greatest of all private collections and whose personalities helped to shape the distinct character the Wallace Collection has today."--Jacket

Renaissance silver from the Schroder collection by Timothy Schroder( Book )

8 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Schroder collection of Renaissance silver is among the most important to remain in private hands. Formed by the Anglo-German Schroder banking family between about 1870 and 1930, it includes outstandingly beautiful and valuable historic objects primarily of the sixteenth century from England, Germany, Italy and elsewhere. Some of these formerly belonged to princely collections such as the royal house of Hanover, the renowned Green Vault at Dresden or the Hollenzollern family. Others came from famous church treasuries, dispersed at the time of the French Revolution or during the early nineteenth-century secularization in Germany. The collection also includes objects from great civic holdings, such as a massive cup given by the city of Luneburg to the future George I of Britain and an intricately enamelled salt cellar sold by the city of Nuremberg in 1806." "Following a brief history by Deborah Lambert of the formation of the collection and the tastes by which it was governed, Timothy Schroder provides an illuminating tour of the world of the Renaissance goldsmith. exploring the original context both for the more magnificent and for the more mundane of these pieces, reproduced in this book in striking new photographs."--Jacket
Watteau at the Wallace Collection by Christoph Martin Vogtherr( Book )

7 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 112 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the most famous and influential artists of the eighteenth century, Jean-Antoine Watteau (c. 1684-1721) fundamentally changed the course of French painting. With masterpieces such as Les charmes de la vie, Lady at her Toilet and Les Champs Élisées, the Wallace Collection preserves one of the three outstanding collections of his paintings worldwide (together with Paris and Berlin) but it has never before been the subject of a special exhibition or a separate study. Continuing the series of monographs highlighting important works by masters in the Wallace Collection, this book discusses in depth all eight paintings by Watteau in the Collection and two of his lesser-known works at the Soane Museum and in York. Each of the paintings, which together span his entire career and represent many aspects of his work, will form the starting point for a chapter of the book
