La règle du jeu by
Jean Renoir(
Visual
)
5 editions published between 1998 and 2011 in French and English and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Denigrated by the public, vilified by the critics, re-cut at the insistence of its producers, and finally banned by the French government as "demoralising" and unpatriotic, "La Règle du jeu" was a commercial disaster at the time of its original release. On the surface, a series of interlinked romantic intrigues taking place at a weekend shooting party in a country chateau, the film is actually a study of the corruption and decay within French society on the eve of the outbreak of World War II. It is now widely recognised as one of the greatest films ever made

Chanel : her style and her life by
Janet Wallach(
Book
)
2 editions published between 1998 and 1999 in German and English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"When she realized that the great love of her life, shipping and coal magnate Arthur "Boy" Capel, wouldn't marry a courtesan, Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel settled for his backing in business and opened her first high-fashion shop. According to Wallach's pictorial biography, such pragmatism characterized Chanel throughout her life, as each of her many famous lovers?Igor Stravinsky, Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich and the Duke of Westminster among them?helped her with money, influence or, at the very least, access to a smashing personal wardrobe. Profuse, if sometimes redundant, illustrations chronicle the canny Frenchwoman's progress from fashion iconoclast to couture icon. Wallach earnestly details the designer's innovations: Chanel popularized the jersey and cardigan and pants for women; legitimized costume jewelry; invented the "little black dress"; developed the ubiquitous, eponymous suit, as well as her trademark fragrance, Chanel No. 5. But as biography, the book offers little more than a list of Chanel's accomplishments and acquaintances. Wallach's (Desert Queen) text is variously silly, sentimental and strangely unidiomatic ("her modest means could never match their well-heeled bank accounts"). Some of the more intriguing details, involving the designer's failure in Hollywood and her romantic and financial connections with the Nazis, suggest a complex, calculating, passionate woman. But the book's most telling moments ultimately don't tell enough about the woman who more or less invented the modern fashion industry. 150 photos and illustrations."--Review From Publishers Weekly, Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc

The Chanel legend : a publication of the Draiflessen collection by
Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg(
Book
)
1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
For many people, Coco Chanel is the greatest fashion designer of the twentieth century. As far back the first decade of the century she was already a passionate advocate of simple, comfortable clothes and paved the way for a style that soon began to assert itself universally. Epochal fashion icons are associated with her person, including the little black dress and the Chanel costume bearing her name. By the early twenties, Coco had already launched her perfume "Chanel No. 5", was self-assuredly combining fashion and genuine jewellery, and had such famous photographers as Man Ray and Horst P. Horst portray her. The exhibition 'The Chanel Legend' with more than 150 original objects from major collections such as the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag explores the question of why Coco Chanel both as a person and the founder of a brand has always remained the subject of such great attention even today

4 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Coco Chanel gave us more than the little black dress and boxy jackets. She popularized easy, practical clothes for women that allowed them a chic freedom they'd never known. In her opinionated, elegant, passionate, entirely French way, Chanel helped bring women into the modern era. Because of this she is the only person in fashion to be named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People of the Twentieth Century. Karen Karbo weaves Chanel's story into themes that subtly convey life lessons and leave us entranced with Chanel's amazing individuality, confidence, and determination. The story of her extraordinary life and rise to unprecedented success is both compelling and admirable. And while the great Coco may have launched her singular empire a hundred years ago, her methods, attitude, and élan are as relevant and modern as ever
