Cherish the earth: the story of gardening in Australia by Beatrice Bligh( Book )

1 edition published in 1980 in English and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Cherish the Earth is the most important gardening book ever published in Australia because it is the first to explain the background against which our gardening tradition has developed. It establishes a foundation for Australian gardening history. Other more definitive studies will possibly follow, but it is unlikely that they will capture the same simple charm, or convey as vivid an impression of the heartbreaking difficulties that beset the early settlers as they struggled to establish their gardens in an unknown and harsh environment. The book traces the story of gardens and gardening in Australia from the findings of Joseph Banks in the 1770s to the enormous variety of gardens found in the 1970s. Extensive quotations have been taken from letters and reports written by early settlers and visitors to the Colony, giving first-hand accouns of the problems they found, and the progress they were making. The 16 colour and 29 black-and-white plates have been carefully chosen to complement the text, and to provide an attractive visual record of the early gardens. Beatrice Bligh spent several years working on Cherish the Earth, undertaking exhaustive research despite the fact that she was in almost constant pain. Sadly she died only a few moths before it was published. As Helen Blaxland says in her foreword, this significant and beautiful book is a tribute to her courage. (Inside cover)
