Chinese by Jerry Norman( Book )

34 editions published between 1987 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 924 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This general introduction to the study of Chinese traces the language's history from its beginnings in the second millennium B.C. to the present, and provides a clear picture of the contemporary language and its sociolinguistic status. Chinese, in its numerous dialects, has more speakers than any other language in the modern world, and this vast extension in time and space brings to its study an exceptional complexity. Nevertheless, Norman's crisp organization and lucid elegance make this extraordinary range of material easily accessible even to those with an elementary understanding of linguistics. Chinese includes information on the genetic and typological connections of the language, the writing system, the classical and early vernacular tongues, the modern language and non-standard dialects, and the history of linguistic reform in China

A guide to the Chien-yang dialect by Jerry Norman( Book )

2 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This document provides a description of the Chien-yang dialect of Chinese along with a comparative description of the Chien-ou dialect and a discussion of the entire Min dialect family. The Min dialects are considered with respect to geography (including maps), internal subgrouping, numbers of speakers, and mutual intelligibility. The main part of the paper concerns the Chien-yang dialect. The phonology section includes statements on syllable structure, initials, finals, tones, tone change, co-occurrence of initials and finals, and sandhi. In the lexicon section, the reading of close to 3000 characters is given in such a way that the phonological system of Chien-yang can be easily compared to the language of the Middle Chinese dictionary. The sample text is a story designed to capture various important particles and grammatical constructions. A phonetic transcription is provided along with an English translation. Grammatical notes follow the text. A bibliography lists materials on particular Min dialects and a character index is provided. An appendix on the Chien-ou dialect is included for comparison with the Chien-yang dialect. A section on phonology, syllabic charts, and comparative lexicon appears in the Chien-ou appendix. For documents on other Chinese dialects, see fl 003 179, fl 003 180, and fl 003 182 through fl 003 184. (vm)
An introduction to the Foochow dialect by Leo Chen( Book )

2 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The foochow dialect is spoken by about seven to ten million chinese in the area in and around the city of foochow, mainland china. This language manual represents the speech of a literate person from that area. Lessons 1-15 consist of--(1) several short foochow passages written in romanization, (2) english translations, (3) a foochow to english vocabulary list, (4) short notes on phonology and grammar, and (5) exercises in translating english sentences into foochow and answering questions written in romanized foochow. Lessons 16-20 are slightly edited narrative texts taken down verbatim from tape recordings by native speakers. Also written in romanized form, these texts can be used for the study of contrastive chinese dialectology as well as for language instruction. The texts range from two to seven pages in length and are accompanied by foochow-english vocabulary lists. It is assumed throughout this manual that the reader is well acquainted with linguistic terminology. A "foochow-english glossary" was written by the same authors to accompany this text. (Jd)
