Coinage and identity in the Roman Provinces by C. J Howgego( )

26 editions published between 2004 and 2020 in English and Polish and held by 1,832 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Coins were the most deliberate of all symbols of public communal identities, yet the Roman historian will look in vain for any good introduction to, or systematic treatment of, the subject. Sixteen leading international scholars have sought to address this need by producing this authoritative collection of essays, which ranges over the whole Roman world from Britain to Egypt, from 200 BC to AD 300. The subject is approached through surveys of the broad geographical and chronological structure of the evidence, through chapters which focus on ways of expressing identity, and through regional studies which place the numismatic evidence in local context
The Cunetio and Normanby hoards : Roger Bland, Edward Besly and Andrew Burnett, with notes to aid identification by Sam Moorhead by Roger Bland( )

11 editions published between 2018 and 2019 in English and held by 638 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Cunetio and Normanby hoards are the two of the largest Roman coin hoards from Britain. They both comprise mostly 'radiate' coins struck in the second half of the 3rd century and are the most important catalogues for people identifying radiate coins in Britain dating from AD 253 to AD 275. The Cunetio hoard was originally published as a single volume, 'The Cunetio Treasure by E.M. Besly and R.F. Bland (British Museum Press, 1983). The Normanby hoard was published along with several other hoards in 'The Normanby Hoard and other Roman coin hoards: Coin Hoards from Roman Britain VIII' edited by R.F. Bland and A.M. Burnett (British Museum Press, 1988). This edition provides the two hoards in one volume with a note on more recent work on the radiate coinage of AD 253-96 and notes to aid identification by Sam Moorhead
Enlightenment : discovering the world in the eighteenth century( Book )

11 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 505 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The extraordinary companion to the British Museum's 250th anniversary exhibition. Opened in 1753 as the world's first public museum, the British Museum epitomized the Age of Enlightenment's dream of a rational universe. Indeed, in many ways the museum was the age's most potent instrument: the incarnation of a world that could be parsed, classified, and comprehended through the physical observation of objects, all in the name of reason, progress, and civic improvement. In this lavishly illustrated volume, published to coincide with a new permanent exhibit, the museum's centrality to the Enlightenment enterprise is explored through the stunning breadth and variety of its early collections. From painting and sculpture to scientific instruments to fossils, the incredible objects displayed in these pages testify to the museum's devotion to discovering and learning about the natural world, the past, and other civilizations. The story of how these global collections were amassed is brilliantly told and includes many accounts of the legendary collectors and expeditions that have made the British Museum one of the world's premier museums. ... Historia numorum--Italy( Book )

9 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 115 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Greeks began to settle in southern Italy in the 8th century BC. Their new cities quickly flourished, and there is no better evidence for their prosperity than the abundant coinages that most of them produced. "Historia Numorum - Italy" has been written to provide a clear and detailed account of the coinage of this prosperous part of Italy, which was sometimes influenced by the Greek model. The book also includes an account of the coinages of cities of Etruria and north-eastern Italy. Arranged overall by geographical area, the mints within each area are then listed alphabetically; included are details of the historical or geographical background, and an examination of the metals, weight standards and chronology. At the end of the book is a plate section containing a wide selection of illustrations of the mints discussed, as well as four maps of the area. The book is fully indexed for ease of reference; the indexes include reverse types and proper names."--Jacket

Coins of the roman revolution (49bc-ad14) : evidence without hindsight by Andrew M Burnett( )

2 editions published in 2020 in English and held by 106 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The long revolutionary age, which culminated in the autocracy of Octavian-Augustus, is one of Roman history's most richly documented periods - and most misrepresented. From Roman to modern times, hindsight has dominated. The theme of Augustus' rise overshadows all. His rivals are commonly defamed (Antony), belittled (Sextus Pompeius), or eclipsed to the point of being barely recognisable (Domitius Ahenobarbus, Cornificius). Seldom in history has the mentality of historians so diverged from the attitudes of contemporaries, the Romans and provincials - all of them - who did not know that Octavian would win, let alone that his regime would survive for decades.0This work privileges a class of neglected evidence which colourfully expresses the uncertainty, and the hopes, not of historians but of contemporaries: coinage. Here an international team of young scholars examine the ideals expressed, and the fears reflected, in the coins issued by warring chiefs during Rome's, and the provinces', long conflicts. There results a subtle and lively characterisation of individuals and ideas which even Augustan ideology could never efface
