Throes of democracy : the American Civil War era, 1829-1877 by Walter A McDougall( Book )

13 editions published between 2008 and 2014 in English and held by 1,164 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From its shocking curtain-raiser--the conflagration that consumed Lower Manhattan in 1835--to the climactic centennial year of 1876, with a corrupt, deadlocked presidential campaign (fought out in Florida), this sequel to Freedom Just Around the Corner carries the saga of the American people's continuous self-reinvention from the inauguration of President Andrew Jackson through the eras of Manifest Destiny, Civil War, and Reconstruction, America's first failed crusade to put "freedom on the march" through regime change and nation building. But, more than just a political history, this book presents the American epic as lived by Germans and Irish, Catholics and Jews, as well as people of British Protestant and African American stock; an epic in which Mormon prophet Joseph Smith, showman P.T. Barnum, and circus clown Dan Rice figure as prominently as Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, and Henry Ward Beecher; in which railroad management and land speculation prove as gripping as Indian wars.--From publisher description
Promised land, crusader state : the American encounter with the world since 1776 by Walter A McDougall( Book )

15 editions published between 1997 and 2007 in English and Arabic and held by 1,075 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Taking up the torch of George Kennan, Pulitzer Prize winner Walter McDougall proposes nothing less than to cleanse the vocabulary of our post-Cold War debate on America's place in world affairs. Looking back over two centuries, he draws a striking contrast between America as a Promised Land, a vision inspired by the "Old Testament" of our diplomatic wisdom through the nineteenth century, and the contrary vision of America as a Crusader State, which inspired the "New Testament" of our foreign policy beginning at the time of the Spanish-American War and reaching its fulfillment in Vietnam. To this day, these two visions and these two testaments battle for control of the way America sees its role in the world

The tragedy of U.S. foreign policy : how America's civil religion betrayed the national interest by Walter A McDougall( Book )

15 editions published between 2016 and 2019 in English and held by 693 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pulitzer Prize--winning historian Walter A. McDougall argues powerfully that a pervasive but radically changing faith that "God is on our side" has inspired U.S. foreign policy ever since 1776. The first comprehensive study of the role played by civil religion in U.S. foreign relations over the entire course of the country's history, McDougall's book explores the deeply infused religious rhetoric that has sustained and driven an otherwise secular republic through peace, war, and global interventions for more than two hundred years. From the Founding Fathers and the crusade for independence to the Monroe Doctrine, through World Wars I and II and the decades-long Cold War campaign against "godless Communism," this coruscating polemic reveals the unacknowledged but freely exercised dogmas of civil religion that bind together a "God blessed" America, sustaining the nation in its pursuit of an ever elusive global destiny

France's rhineland policy, 1914-1924 by Walter A McDougall( )

6 editions published between 1978 and 2016 in English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Walter McDougall offers an original analysis of Versailles diplomacy from the standpoint of the power that had the most direct interest and took the first initiatives in the search for a solution to the German problem. The author's new view of the struggle for execution or revision of the Versailles treaty holds sober implications for assessment of the political origins of international anarchy during the 1930s and European integration in the 1950s. He shows that the Treaty of Versailles was unenforceable, and that the French postwar government, far from enjoying predominance in Europe, suffered from financial crisis and economic and political inferiority to Germany. Versailles was thus the "Boche" peace, and the only path to a stable Europe seemed to lie through permanent restriction of German economic and political unity. Originally published in 1978.
