Changing fortunes : the world's money and the threat to American leadership by Paul A Volcker( Book )

12 editions published between 1992 and 1993 in English and held by 1,081 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A sweeping work of history and analysis, Changing Fortunes chronicles the worlds economic upheavals since 1945 and the challenges to American prosperity and hegemony--from the perspective of two distinguished statesman, an American and a Japanese. Paul Volcker, the legendary former chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, and Toyoo Gyohten, one of Japan's leading economic policy makers, have been major figures on the world scene for more than two decades. In Changing Fortunes, they explain the huge changes in the international monetary order both helped to shape. With candor and insight, Volcker and Gyohten explore the decisions and personalities that have influenced the world's economy over the last fifty years. Changing Fortunes begins with the stability and wealth of the Bretton Woods era and stretches through the financial turmoils of the Vietnam War; the devaluation, floating, and ensuing decline of the dollar; the oil shocks of the 1970s and the Federal Reserves battle against inflation; the Latin American debt crisis; and, finally, the Reagan administration's attempt to manage the international economy after first ignoring the consequences of its policies for the rest of the world. Volcker and Gyohten recount each episode from an American and a Japanese position, offering a uniquely broad view of critical issues. Through keen portraits of the people and the politics of international economics, the authors bring a complex subject to life and address fundamental questions for the world's economic order after the Cold War--a world in which the United States must share the burdens of leadership. As Paul Volcker writes in the introduction: "How much of the relative decline of the United States was natural, how much of it was desirable, and how much of it came from self-inflicted wounds? Should we, with the help of the Japanese, have worked harder to maintain the Bretton Woods system and the stability its exchange rates provided? Has the breakdown of that system been partly responsible for the slower world growth and greater instability in the past two decades? Where do we go from here without so dominant and enlightened a leader as the United States was at the end of World War II?" Lucid, accessible, and full of challenging insights, Changing Fortunes is essential reading for anyone interested in the world's money--past, present, and future

I recall reading some of the early Stamp Lectures when I was a student of economics a good many years ago. The series had quickly made its mark in promoting the application of rigorous economic thinking to the practical problems of the world. The effort was a distinguishing characteristic of Josiah Stamp in all his enormous range of activities. His long service as Governor and Chairman of the London School of Economics reflected that dedication. I feel singularly honoured to deliver this 50th anniversary lecture celebrating a truly distinguished Englishman of the 20th century

The power of gold : the history of an obsession by Peter L Bernstein( )

3 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The need for realism in reform of its monetary system is what makes Bernstein's story of the Power of Gold so timely. It is a compelling reminder that maintaining a fixed price for gold and fixed exchange rates were difficult even in a simpler financial environment. Peter Bernstein was reluctant to project the story of gold into the future. But to me his message was clear. Yes, gold will be with us, valued not only for its intrinsic qualities but as a last refuge and store of value in turbulent times. But its days as money, as a means of payment and a fixed unit of account are gone." /'bFrom the New Foreword by Paul Volcker/b bThis bestselling book reveals a record of human nature in the ubiquity of gold/b with a new foreword by Paul Volcker/ In this exciting book, the late Peter L. Bernstein tells the story of history's most coveted, celebrated, and inglorious asset: gold. From the ancient fascinations of Moses and Midas through the modern convulsions caused by the gold standard and its aftermath, gold has led many of its most eager and proud possessors to a bad end. And while the same cycle of obsession and desperation may reverberate in today's fast-moving, electronically-driven markets, the role of gold in shaping human history is the striking feature of this tumultuous tale. Such is the power of gold./ Whether it is Egyptian pharaohs with depraved tastes, the luxury-mad survivors of the Black Death, the Chinese inventor of paper money, the pirates on the Spanish Main, or the hardnosed believers in the international gold standard, gold has been the supreme possession. It has been an icon for greed and an emblem of rectitude, as well as a vehicle for vanity and a badge of power that has shaped the destiny of humanity through the ages./ ulliDiscusses the beginnings of gold as something with magical, religious, and artistic qualities and follows its trail as we progress to the invention of coinage, the transformation of gold into money, and the gold standard /liliOther bestselling books by the late Peter Bernstein: iAgainst the Gods/i, iCapital Ideas/i, and iCapital Ideas Evolving/i /liliContemplates gold from the diverse perspectives of monarchs and moneyers, potentates and politicians, men of legendary wealth and others of more plebeian beginnings /li/ul Far more than a tale of romantic myths, daring explorations, and the history of money and power struggles, iThe Power of Gold/i suggests that the true significance of this infamous element may lie in the timeless passions it continues to evoke, and what this reveals about ourselves
