An appraisal of seven harmony textbooks used in American institutions of higher learning, at the undergraduate level, during the 1955-56 school year by George Edward Moore( Book )

This textbook contains a number of serious weaknesses. The most important of these are: 1) that there are too few selections from music literature; 2) that these are poorly distributed throughout the textbook; and 3) none of these selections are supplied with tempo indications. Concerning the relationship between theoretical discussion and selections from music literature two weaknesses are important to note: 1) only a very small portion of such discussion is closely related to the selections presented, and 2) though discussion which is closely related to these selections more often follows than precedes them, the difference is not great. In regard to the presentation of technical materials the following weaknesses are evident: 1) logical order of chord presentation (as opposed to a use-frequency order); 2) inadequate integration of the various structural elements; and 3) poor distribution of discussion relating to these structural elements
