This symposium was a dedication to John L. Hall, who was recently awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, (report below). The symposium was a celebration of his striking career in physics and his impressive record of achievements. Papers included in this volume offer brief and personal glimpses of some of his achievements, the research he inspired, and the great friendships he has built. Nobel Prize Report : John L. Hall, a Scientist Emeritus of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and a Fellow of JILA (joint institute of NIST and University of Colorado) has been awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physics. Hall shared the Nobel with Theodor W. Hansch of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics and a professor of physics at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany, and Roy J. Glauber, a professor of physics at Harvard University. Hall and Hansch were awarded half the Nobel Prize for their contributions to the development of laser-based precision spectroscopy, including the optical frequency comb technique. An optical frequency comb is generated by a laser specially designed to produce a series of extremely short - a few billionths of a second - equally spaced pulses of light

"We have constructed a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser source stabilized via modulation transfer spectroscopy to hyperfine absorption peaks in molecular iodine. The system is suitable for use an an optical frequency standard because of the excellent stability (0 <1 x 10-13 for T [greater than or equal to] 1 s) and reproducibility (75 Hz per ir laser) observed between two independent dissimilar systems. With heterodyne techniques, we have measured the hyperfine splittings of seven rovibrational transitions in 127I2. A computer fits the data for the hyperfine coupling constants based on a four term Hamilitonian. The residuals from these fits have a standard deviation as low as 520 Hz, displaying the best reported agreement to date with the quadrupolar hyperfine Hamiltonian. Modulation transfer lineshapes have been accurately recorded using rf offset phase-locking techniques with our two systems. Pressure shift ( -1.3 kHz/Pa) and broadening (74 kHz/Pa) of the a1 component of R(56)32-0 have been derived from these lineshape measurements."

"Frequency reference based on a Cs hyperfine transition was introduced in the 1950s and improved orders of magnitude over the years, pushing uncertainties as low as 1 x 10-15. Then the Miraculous-Millennium-Year-Confluence-of-Progress occurred: (1) ultrafast lasers generated 10 fs pulses with a stable repetition rate; (2) microstructure fibers appeared with near zero dispersion, setting the stage for ultra-nonlinear response, drastic pulse bandwidth expansion, and the *Optical Frequency Comb* currently being celebrated; and (3) ultrastable laser control tools were developed to allow the comb to carry the stability of the reference source. Relative frequency measurements can now be made in the 10-17 domain. The next big race is now on. Who can discover an optical transition frequency or fundamental constant that is changing a little bit in time? "With the aid of two iodine spectrometers, we report for the first time the measurement of the hyperfine splittings of the P(54)32-0 and R(57)32-0 transitions near 532 nm. Within the tuning range of the frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser, modulation transfer spectroscopy recovers nine relatively strong ro-vibrational transitions of 127 I2 molecules with excellent SNR. These transitions are now linked together with their absolute frequencies determined by measuring directly the frequency gaps between each line and the R(56)32-0: [Greek letter alpha] 10 component. This provides an attractive frequency reference network in this wavelength region."
