Harpagon, a rich miser, has a daughter, Elise, whom he wishes to marry to another old man, Anselme, because the latter is willing to take her without a dowry. He himself proposes to marry a young lady, Mariane, hoping to get a dowry with her. But his son Cleante already loves Mariane. Valere, a young man in love with Elise, takes service with Harpagon in the guise of a steward, hoping to further his suit. Cleante, determined to win Mariane from his father, obtains possession of a box containing part of Harpagon's treasure, and the old miser is distraught by its loss. Suspicion is thrown on Valere, who, by an amusing misunderstanding, thinks that he is being charged with designs on Elise, admits his guilt, and pleads the allurement of her 'beaux yeux' ('Les beaux yeux de ma cassette!' exclaims Harpagon). Finally the matter is cleared up. Harpagon surrenders his daughter to Valere, who is discovered to be the lost son of Anselme, and, in consideration of the return of his treasure, consents to his son's marriage with Mariane. But in his last words he stipulates that he is to be put to no expense. In this ... comedy, [the author] showed how avarice not only kills all sense of dignity and paternal affection in the miser himself, but also provokes disrespect and revolt in his children.-The Oxford companion to French Literature
