Changes towards internal locus of control as a function of improving time management skills by Linda Brockmeyer( )

1 edition published in 1987 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Locus of Control (LOC) refers to the generalized expectancy that one controls the events in his/her life (internal orientation) or that events are controlled by other forces, such as luck (external orientation). According to many reviews of the extensive LOC literature, it is beneficial to have an internal rather than an external orientation. For example, desirable characteristics such as personal adjustment, high self-esteem, good job performance and job satisfaction are associated with internal LOC. This study was undertaken to identify and test a model which could be of use in an organizational setting for promoting the belief in internal control. A time management training model was chosen on the assumption that people who learn to manage their time better would feel more in control of their lives. The 67 University of Central Florida students who accepted the free Daytimers (a widely used professional time management system) and completed the pretest and posttest questionnaires served as the sample. The questionnaires in Rotter's LOC scale and a time management skills scale, and were administered at the beginning and end of the Spring semester. The Daytimers were distributed immediately after the pretest. Students who made frequent use of the Daytimers improved their time management skills and became more internal by the end of the semester. There were no corresponding significant changes in either time management skills or LOC for students who used the Daytimers infrequently. These results suggest that time management training can be used to promote the belief in internal control. Future research is recommended to verify the expectations that these changes in LOC will result in better personal adjustment, greater job performance and more job satisfaction
Visual and part-task manipulations for teaching simulated carrier landings by Darren Sheppard( )

1 edition published in 1983 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A quasi-transfer-of-training study was conducted with 36 flight-naive subjects to investigate a segmentation method of part-task training, and two methods of visual augmentation, for teaching simulated carrier landings. One visual enhancement involved adding two types of descent rate information (designated RATE and COMMAND) to the FLOLS display. The experimental sequence consisted of 30 training trials with instructional feedback under a particular experimental condition, followed by 30 test trials with no instructional feedback under the criterion condition (whole task with conventional and small FLOLS). Possibly the most important finding of this study is that transfer from a large to a small FLOLS has no general detrimental effects. The fact that a larger FLOLS can provide satisfactory training will permit a less expensive approach to simulating the FLOLS. A possible difficulty with AOA control in early transfer was noted, but sufficient care in training should overcome this potential problem. Experimental and standard formats for procedural instruction : evaluation of merging pictorials and words by Anne M Polino( )

1 edition published in 1979 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Three methods of training procedural tasks were studied. Forty-five high aptitude and fourth-five low aptitude Naval trainees from the Basic Electronics and Electricity School, Orlando, Florida, were given training with either a programmed instruction text with a pictorial-print information presentation format, or a standard narrative text. The effects of instructional method and aptitude on the performance of a procedural task after 1 1/2 hours of study and after on week's time were evaluated. It was shown that subjects who studied the programmed instruction text with the pictorial-print information presentation format made significantly (p<.0001) fewer performance errors, immediately after study and after one week, than did the subjects who studied the other methods. It was also shown that high aptitude subjects performed significantly (p<.0001) better than low aptitude subjects, regardless of training method. However, it was found that the low aptitude subjects who studied the programmed instruction text with the pictorial-print information presentation format performed significantly (p<0.1) better than the low aptitude subjects who studied the other materials. These low aptitude subjects who studied the other materials. These low aptitude subjects also performed significantly (p<.01) better than the high aptitude subjects who studied the standard narrative text
