Recopilación de registros anteriores que reúnen en una sola caja un buen surtido de la música del estadounidense Samuel Barber, uno de esos "artistas de una sola obra", cuyo brillo del Adagio para cuerdas ha ensombrecido otras obras muy valiosas. Como corolarios del Adagio, y continuando su estética contemplativa, surgen los tres Ensayos para orquesta. Más autonomía e interés tiene el Concierto para violín, pieza virtuosa al estilo decimonónico. Hay mucho lirismo en sus dos primeros movimientos, que Elmar Oliveira explota con sabiduría y musicalidad. La versión de Slatkin de las obras orquestales es minuciosa y original. El Adagio suena lentísimo, que es lo suyo, la curva de tensión asciende con suavidad y alcanza el clímax con notable precisión. Muy bien la Sinfónica de Saint Louis
