Wozzeck by Alban Berg( Recording )

27 editions published between 1985 and 1989 in 4 languages and held by 850 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

James Levine, a longtime champion of this groundbreaking work, has conducted every Met performance of Wozzeck since 1974. He brings Berg's revolutionary score to dramatic life in this broadcast, leading an extraordinary cast headed by Christian Boesch and Hildegard Behrens. Boesch gives a heartbreaking performance as the poor, abused soldier of the title, and Behrens is stunning as his faithless and conflicted wife, Marie. Richard Cassilly sings the vain Drum Major who seduces her, and Ragnar Ulfung and Franz Mazura are the Captain and the Doctor, who mock and torture Wozzeck
Elektra by Richard Strauss( )

34 editions published between 1988 and 2014 in 4 languages and held by 694 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Under James Levine's galvanizing leadership, this all-star cast realizes all the gripping emotion and drama of Strauss's masterpiece. Hildegard Behrens is searing in the title role, as the daughter obsessed with avenging the murder of her father, King Agamemnon. A sumptuous-voiced Deborah Voigt is her sister Chrysothemis, who longs only for a normal life as a mother and wife. It is their mother, Klytämnestra, (powerfully portrayed by Brigitte Fassbaender) and her husband Aegisth (James King) who must atone for the murder with their own lives--delivered by Oreste (Donald McIntyre), Agamemnon's exiled son

Franco Zeffirelli both stage-directed and designed the sets for this 1985 Metropolitan Opera production of Puccini's romantic opera Tosca. The story revolves around the singer Floria Tosca (Hildegard Behrens), who is jealous of her lover, painter Mario Cavaradossi (Placido Domingo). The corrupt police chief Scarpia (Cornell MacNeil) is after the escaped political prisoner Cesare Angelotti (James Courtney), who is friends with Mario. The treacherous Scarpia arrests Mario, Angelotti kills himself, and Tosca gets homicidal. Several murders and betrayals later, the conclusion involves Mario and Tosca before a firing squad in the dramatic final act. Conducted by Guiseppe Sinopoli

Der Freischutz by Carl Maria von Weber( )

40 editions published between 1980 and 2000 in 5 languages and held by 449 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wagner said this early-Romantic gem was the most German of German operas. Its irresistible mix of colorful folklore, the spooky supernatural, a tender romance, and the passionate struggle between good and evil are all captured in Weber's tuneful and dramatic score. The cast in this rare U.S. performance is sensational: Sándor Kónya as our hero, the forester Max, who must win a shooting contest in order to marry his beloved Agathe (the ravishing Pilar Lorengar), despite the dark plotting of Caspar (Gerd Feldhoff)
Der fliegende Holländer by Richard Wagner( )

25 editions published between 1991 and 2012 in 5 languages and held by 433 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Flying Dutchman is condemned to roam the seven seas for eternity, until he can find a woman who can redeem him through her unswerving love. James Morris's Dutchman is legendary--utterly commanding, beautifully sung, and revealing every bit of this character's inner torture and hope. The great Matti Salminen is Daland, a sea captain with a daughter he would like to marry off, and Hildegard Behrens is Senta, his daughter who longs to save the Dutchman. With conductor James Conlon making the Met orchestra another character in the drama, this is Wagnerian storytelling at its best

In this incandescent performance conducted by James Levine, James Morris's legendary Wotan is coupled with Hildegard Behrens's searing Brünnhilde, and Jessye Norman and Gary Lakes are the passionate Siegmund and Sieglinde. The great Christa Ludwig is Wotan's exacting wife Fricka
