Aurélia by Gérard de Nerval( Book )

173 editions published between 1904 and 2013 in 13 languages and held by 633 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Throughout his life, the poet and writer Gérard de Nerval (1808-1855) struggled with bouts of madness--inspired in part by his obsessions for idealized women--and he ended his life wandering homeless on the streets of Paris until he was found hanging from a sewer grating, an apparent suicide. As one of the most individualistic of the colorful French Romantics, the details of Nerval's life have passed into legend. Writers and commentators have served up any number of versions of his mysterious love affair with the actress Jenny Colon--not to mention his famous habit of walking a lobster on a pale blue leash through the gardens of the Palais Royale. Soon after the completion, in 1853, of his bizarre tale of obsession, the novella Sylvie, Nerval began, under advice from his doctor, an extended personal journal/essay chronicling his psychic experiences and visions. What emerged from these writings is Aurélia, a text hailed by the Surrealists as an important precursor to their own theories. Simply put, Aurélia, is a masterpiece in the literature of dreams, myths, and hallucinations. This expanded and corrected version of the original 1991 Asylum Arts edition of Aurélia, adds the novella Sylvie. Together these novellas give witness to the claim that Nerval was one of the most remarkable prose writers of his century. --Asylum Arts Publishing
Faust : a tragedy : backgrounds and sources, the author on the drama, contemporary reactions, modern criticism by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe( Book )

170 editions published between 1828 and 2011 in 4 languages and held by 623 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This edition includes Parts I and II complete. The backgrounds include the medieval Chapbook, the puppet play, and a surviving fragment of G. E. Lessing's Faust play. The author's plans and sketches, and a rich selection of his letters and comments to Eckermann, trace Goethe's lifelong involvement in the work, as does an analytical table showing the phases of composition. The contemporary reactions show how rapidly Faust came to be seen as a quintessential expression of German Romantic consciousness. The essays have been chosen to help readers perceive and understand Faust's extraordinary thematic and formal complexity--Cover

Selected writings by Gérard de Nerval( Book )

15 editions published between 1957 and 2006 in English and Undetermined and held by 231 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gerard de Nerval (1808-1855), a contemporary of Poe, De Quincey, Gogol and Heine, introduced into French literature a mode of writing rooted in German romanticism yet already recognizably modernist in its explorations of the uncertain borderlines between dream and reality, irony and madness, autobiography and fiction." "This selection of writings - the first such comprehensive gathering to appear in English - provides an overview of Nerval's work as a poet, belletrist, short-story writer and autobiographer. In addition to 'Aurelia', the memoir of his madness, 'Sylvie' (considered a 'masterpiece' by Proust), and the hermetic sonnets of 'The Chimeras', this volume includes Nerval's Doppelganger tales and experimental fictions. Selections from his correspondence demonstrate a lucid awareness of the strategies by which nineteenth-century psychiatry consigned his visionary imagination to the purgatory of mental illness."--Jacket
