Beloved by generations of Chinese readers, The Dream of the Red Chamber is China's touching equivalent of the Romeo & Juliet story. In addition to being a tale of star-crossed lovers, this epic novel also follows the story of five generations of one Chinese family giving modern readers a multi-layered dramatic plot to get lost in at the same time as it offers up key insights into Chinese culture

The story of the stone : a Chinese novel in five volumes by Xueqin Cao( Book )

10 editions published between 1973 and 1980 in English and held by 734 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Story of the Stone (c. 1760), also known by the title of The Dream of the Red Chamber, is the great novel of manners in Chinese literature. Divided into five volumes, The Story of the Stone charts the glory and decline of the illustrious Jia family. This novel re-creates the ritualized hurly-burly of Chinese family life that would otherwise be lost and infuses it with affirming Buddhist belief. --from publisher description
The dream of the red chamber = Hung lou mêng : a Chinese novel of the early Ching period by Xueqin Cao( Book )

23 editions published between 1958 and 1976 in English and Undetermined and held by 240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The first realistic novel in Chinese, The Dream of the Red Chamber is a vast, abundantly peopled chronicle of a noble family in the 18th century, rich, powerful, singled out for generations by imperial favor. But the splendor of enchanting gardens and pleasure pavilions and a daily life of the most sophisticated refinements hide the symptoms of decline and self-destruction. A decaying civilization of great complexity displays its virtues and vices with an intimacy that is wholly enthralling. Characters and scenes are magnificently realized: the ruling matriarch, vigorous and earthy to the point of coarseness; her son, a strict, inflexible Confucian and stern disciplinarian; her grandson Pao Yu, the hero of the story, neurotic, brilliant, effeminate, and happy only in the company of young girls; and Pao Yu's sisters and cousins, who live with him in the Park of Delightful Vision. Great occasions of the family's social glory are set in telling contrast against the catastrophes that nearly destroy the proud house. Yet beneath all the lively and glittering pageant is a strangely mystical mood, an all-pervading sense of the transitoriness of things earthly. Though immensely popular in China and long considered the peak of Chinese fictional literature, The Dream of the Red Chamber seemed inaccessible to the Western reader, for it presented almost insuperable difficulties to the translator. Of various attempts at translation, Dr. Franz Kuhn's version is the only truly successful one : its style and presentation bring the novel alive, and its excellence has been recognized by leading sinologists; hence it has been made the basis for this English translation by Florence and Isabel McHugh
The dream of the red chamber : Hung lou meng, books l and ll by Xueqin Cao( )

Baoyu has always believed that he will marry his childhood sweetheart, Daiyu. Daiyu is beautiful and talented, very sensitive, and physically fragile. It is a huge shock to him when he learns that his parents want him to marry Baochai instead, a healthy and considerate girl. Baoyu's family is fast losing its fame and fortune. One by one, Baoyu's female friends, relatives and servants are being married off or sold, and he realizes just how much he values the qualities of the women in his life. Will Baoyu surrender to life's harsh realities and give up his true love? What can he do to protect the women he loves from violence, neglect, and abuse? Full of a fiery passion for love and beauty, Dream of the Red Chamber is the story of a young man in search of what is truly important to him
The story of the stone : a novel in five volumes by Xueqin Cao( Book )

21 editions published between 1969 and 2016 in 5 languages and held by 96 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is rated one of the greatest works of Chinese literature. Metaphysical, allegorical, and vividly realistic, the immense scope of The Story of the Stone provides something for everyone. A rich family saga, a tragic love story, and a philosophical meditation it is one of those rare huge books in which one can lose oneself completely. It begins as the story of the Stone, a supernatural entity endowed with consciousness that winds up in the mortal world and must find the path to enlightenment. His fate is inextricably bound with another creature from the Land of Illusion, the Crimson Pearl Flower. The Stone is responsible for its transformation into a fairy girl -- and she vows to repay him with "a debt of tears", willing to suffer for a lifetime in the world of mere mortals. The Stone describes how his story -- The Story of the Stone -- is the record of his journey to enlightenment, and offers the tale as a tool for others to follow his path, as, for example Vanitas does in the first chapter. --www.complete-review.com
