Valperga, or, The life and adventures of Castruccio, Prince of Lucca by
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley(
)
58 editions published between 1823 and 2010 in 3 languages and held by 1,964 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Valperga, published in 1823 and reprinted here for the first time, was Mary Shelley's second novel, the successor to Frankenstein. Set in fourteenth-century Tuscany, the novel shares certain structural features with the popular fictions of Sir Walter Scott, most notably the novel Ivanhoe with its contrasting heroines, but Mary Shelley's work pointedly challenges Scott's model, inverting his masculinist and conservative outlook, foregrounding the lives of its principal women, Euthanasia dei Adimari and Beatrice of Ferrara, and attaching to the figure of Castruccio Castracani, Prince of Lucca, a retrograde authoritarianism and sterile lust for power. Valperga, steeped in Mary Shelley's command of local Italian history and culture, offers the vivid pleasures of accomplished historical fiction, while at the same time representing in the clash between Castruccio and Euthanasia a struggle between autocracy and liberal democracy that speaks directly to the contemporary political tensions of post-Napoleonic Europe. Timed for Mary Shelley's bicentennial and superbly introduced by Stuart Curran, this exciting new edition makes available a bold yet little-known work by one of the finest minds in English letters."--Jacket

Mathilda by
Mary Wollstonecraft(
Book
)
76 editions published between 1819 and 2019 in 6 languages and held by 1,166 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Mary Shelley's Mathilda, the story of one woman's existential struggle after learning of her father's desire for her, has been identified as Shelley's most important work after Frankenstein. The two texts share many characteristics, besides authorship and contemporaneity: both concern parental abandonment; both contribute to the Gothic form through themes of incest, insanity, suicidality, monstrosity, and isolation; and both are epistolary. However, Mathilda was not published until 1959, 140 years after Shelley wrote it--in part because Shelley's father, William Godwin, suppressed it. This new edition encourages a critical reconsideration of a novella that has been critically stereotyped as biographical, and explores the importance of the novella to the Romantic debate about suicide. Historical appendices trace the connections between Mathilda and other works by Shelley and by her mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, while also providing biographical documents, contemporary works on the theme of incest, and documents on suicide in the Romantic era."--

Frankenstein : the original 1818 'uncensored' edition by
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley(
)
1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 682 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is the original 1818 'Uncensored' Edition of Frankenstein as first published anonymously in 1818. This original version is much more true to the spirit of the author's original intentions than the heavily revised 1831 edition, edited by Shelley, in part, because of pressure to make the story more conservative. Many scholars prefer the 1818 text to the more common 1831 edition. Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel written by Mary Shelley about a creature produced by an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was nineteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty-one. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823. Shelley had travelled in the region of Geneva, where much of the story takes place, and the topics of galvanism and other similar occult ideas were themes of conversation among her companions, particularly her future husband, Percy Shelley. The storyline emerged from a dream. Mary, Percy, Lord Byron, and John Polidori decided to have a competition to see who could write the best horror story. After thinking for weeks about what her possible storyline could be, Shelley dreamt about a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had made. She then wrote Frankenstein

Proserpine & Midas : two unpublished mythological dramas by
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley(
)
24 editions published between 1922 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 525 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Proserpine" and "Midas" are two verse dramas written by Mary Shelley in 1820. Both stories are adaptations of classical tales and are written in blank verse. Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary?s husband, also contributed lyric poems to the two plays. Mary found little success in her attempts to publish the stories. Written as juvenile fiction, she hoped to release them in children?s publications but was rejected. "Proserpine" was not published until 1832. "Midas" was not in print during Mary?s lifetime. Literary scholar Andr? Koszul first published it in 1922. "Proserpine" is an adaptation of the Roman poet Ovid?s take on the Greek myth of the seasons. Shelley, however, focuses on the female point of view in the story. She emphasizes Ceres? love for her daughter and the determination in her search. She features themes of motherly love, community and kindness. "Midas," on the other hand, is an androcentric tale of greed and ego. King Midas? primary concern is his affection for gold and riches, but when his wish works against him, he realizes his mistakes. In her writing, Shelley demonstrates a good command of the English language. Her descriptions and writing style, which often focus on elements of daily life, are similar to other female authors of her time
