I, Titian by Norbert Wolf( Book )

3 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 364 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Now available in a flexi-cover edition, this book offers a multi-dimensional exploration of Titian's life and art. One of the original celebrity artists, Titian was famous for his beguiling personality as he was for his masterful paintings. This book introduces readers to the Venetian artist with an innovative format that marries Titian's voice with his works, allowing the artist's own words to deepen the appreciation of his achievements. An illustrated timeline and a pictorial tour of the galleries where his works now reside reveal how this contemporary of Michelangelo and Raphael broke new ground in nearly every genre of painting: portraiture, altar pieces, the rendering of mythological themes, frescoes, and pastoral landscapes. Numerous superb reproductions illuminate not just the breadth of his oeuvre, but also the mastery with which he employed light and color to lend his paintings the sensuous energy for which he is so admired. Norbert Wolf's engaging text unlocks many of the mysteries surrounding Titian's celebrity, making this journey into the artist's world as intriguing as it is informative."--Publisher description

The age of Titian : Venetian renaissance art from Scottish collections by Peter Humfrey( Book )

2 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Painting in Renaissance Venice represents one of the most vital chapters in the entire history of European art. Its influence was due, above all, to the achievement of its dominant personality, Titian. But Titian was merely the greatest in a constellation of pictorial geniuses and extraordinary craftsmen, foremost among them Giovanni Bellini, Lorenzo Lotto, Jacopo Bassano, Jacopo Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese and Alessandro Vittoria. All of these artists are represented here with works of superlative quality, many of which have never before been published. The paintings are complemented by examples of drawings, prints, sculpture and decorative arts from this period. This book examines not only the Golden Age of Venetian art but also the collectors who were responsible for bringing such works to Scotland."--Jacket
Bellini, Titian, and Lotto : North Italian paintings from the Accademia Carrara, Bergamo by Andrea Bayer( Book )

4 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 246 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Accademia Carrara of Bergamo is one of Italyʹs premier paintings galleries but remains too little known outside the country. The temporary closure and restoriation of its galleries, housed in a grand neoclassical building in the North Italian city of Bergamo, has made possible a welcome collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, bringing to New York fifteen of the Carraraʹs masterpieces by Venetian and North Italian painters of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, including Giovanni Bellini's haunting Pieta with the Virgin and Saint John, the predella panels from Lorenzo Lottoʹs celebrated Martinengo Altarpiece, and Orpheus and Eurydice, an ambitious composition fromTitian's early career. -- Publisher description

Matt's old masters : Titian, Rubens, Velázquez, Hogarth by Matthew Collings( Book )

1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 141 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Welcome to an alarming book. In it Matthew Collings, known for his TV programmes and books about new art, tells you how to look at the old masters. Of course you can look at them however you like. But this book gives you some art historical facts as the context for what you're looking at - Collings gives you the resources you need, in order to make sense of what you're seeing. And he gets you to think for yourself. In art culture today all you hear about are literal meanings, about subject matter and ideas. Matt Collings objects to the droning repetition of that stuff. He looks to the past for a different model of art, one where the surface, the form, the look of something, is part of the idea, maybe even the main thing. We can't have the past back as a complete package, of course. That would be mad. But we can find critical principles in it that we can use to make something better out of our own time. The key figures he has chosen are Titian, Rubens, Velasquez and Hogarth. The first three stand for the highest that painting can go - rich, free, flowing, grand. In art historical terms, this is the 'painterly' stream of art. The last one didn't punch quite so high, but in him Collings sees a principle of adapting your understanding and admiration for what seems higher and greater than yourself - the achievements of the past - to your own sense of what is alive and real. Matthew Collings' new book gives a unique approach to the paintings of the past
