Carlo Ridolfi(

)
2 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 491 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Life of Titian by the seventeenth-century Venetian artist and writer Carlo Ridolfi is one of the most important contemporary documentary sources for our understanding of the great Renaissance artist. This new critical edition, the first translation into English of Ridolfi's biography, illuminates his life, his artistic production, and his early critical reputation. The editors address art-historical questions of attribution, provenance, and documentation that Ridolfi's biography raises. Two introductory essays present the nature, scope, and importance of the biography for the study of Titian and Venetian Renaissance art and place Ridolfi in the tradition of Renaissance biography and artistic literature

"Titian was as famous for his beguiling personality as he was for his masterful paintings. I, Titian introduces readers to the influential painter, allowing the artist's own words to deepen an appreciation of his achievements. The text is supplemented by a concise biography and timeline to provide an in-depth look at the life and work of the visionary artist, immersing the reader into the time and place in which he painted."--BOOK JACKET

Titian : the complete paintings by
Peter Humfrey(
Book
)
2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 331 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Tiziano Vecellio, or Titian (c. 1488/90-1576), was one of the greatest and most influential painters not merely of the Italian Renaissance, but of the entire history of western art. His exceptionally long career was spent entirely in Venice, where he had established himself as leader of the local school by about 1516. But Titian's career was also remarkable for its international dimension, and his work for an array of Italian princes in the 1520s and '30s led in the 1540s to major commissions from the Emperor Charles V and Pope Paul III, and from their relatives and courtiers. In the last two decades of his life he worked chiefly for King Philip II of Spain. Titian was admired for the vividness of his numerous portraits and the dramatic power of his altarpieces and mythologies, but above all for his spectacular mastery of the medium of oil painting, evident in the sensuous richness of his palette and the poetic expressiveness of his brushstroke." "The present volume consists essentially of a catalogue containing some three hundred entries. Here basic factual information on each of Titian's works and summaries of the current state of scholarship are complemented by illustrations in colour. The catalogue is preceded by an introduction surveying the painter's life and career, tracing his stylistic development, and considering his legacy in the seventeenth century and beyond. Also included in the volume is the account of Titian's life by his first biographer, Giorgio Vasari, who accurately predicted his importance for future generations."--Jacket

The age of Titian : Venetian renaissance art from Scottish collections by
Peter Humfrey(
Book
)
3 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 255 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Painting in Renaissance Venice represents one of the most vital chapters in the entire history of European art. Its influence was due, above all, to the achievement of its dominant personality, Titian. But Titian was merely the greatest in a constellation of pictorial geniuses and extraordinary craftsmen, foremost among them Giovanni Bellini, Lorenzo Lotto, Jacopo Bassano, Jacopo Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese and Alessandro Vittoria. All of these artists are represented here with works of superlative quality, many of which have never before been published. The paintings are complemented by examples of drawings, prints, sculpture and decorative arts from this period. This book examines not only the Golden Age of Venetian art but also the collectors who were responsible for bringing such works to Scotland."--Jacket

The Accademia Carrara of Bergamo is one of Italyʹs premier paintings galleries but remains too little known outside the country. The temporary closure and restoriation of its galleries, housed in a grand neoclassical building in the North Italian city of Bergamo, has made possible a welcome collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, bringing to New York fifteen of the Carraraʹs masterpieces by Venetian and North Italian painters of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, including Giovanni Bellini's haunting Pieta with the Virgin and Saint John, the predella panels from Lorenzo Lottoʹs celebrated Martinengo Altarpiece, and Orpheus and Eurydice, an ambitious composition fromTitian's early career. -- Publisher description
