The Roman history : the reign of Augustus by Cassius Dio Cocceianus( Book )

73 editions published between 1557 and 1988 in 4 languages and held by 648 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Brings to life for us the unrest and conspiracies, the struggle over the imperial succession, the prodigies and portents, the military campaigns all the way from Ethiopia to Yugoslavia. The author shows us the ruthless power-seeking as the 400-year-old republic finally collapsed and makes a great set-piece of the battle of Actium -- where Augustus defeated Antony and Cleopatra to become master of the world. He also inserts fictionalized speeches into his narrative, which offer his own profound political reflections or dramatize the many different attitudes to the emperor. The fascinating debate between the great general Agrippa and Maecenas (the patron of Horace and Virgil) on the merits of republicanism and monarchy confronts issues which are still very much alive today
Dio's Roman history by Cassius Dio Cocceianus( Book )

143 editions published between 1914 and 2010 in 5 languages and held by 350 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The ninth of 80 books published over 22 years, this volume of Cassius Dio's Roman History includes the earliest complete account of the Great Fire of Rome occurring on July 19, 64 AD. According to historic accounts like Dio's, the fire spread quickly and burned for six days. Only four of the 14 Roman districts escaped the flames, and three districts were completely destroyed. According to Dio and other historians, Nero, the emperor at the time, sent men out to set fire to the city and sang "The Sack of Troy" while playing his lyre as Rome was consumed in flames

Of the eighty books of Dio's great work Roman History, covering the era from the legendary landing of Aeneas in Italy to the reign of Alexander Severus, we possess Books 36-60 (36 and 55-60 have gaps), which cover the years 68 BC - AD 47). The missing portions are partly supplied, for the earlier gaps by Zonaras, who relies closely on Dio, and for some later gaps (Book 35 onwards) by John Xiphilinus (of the eleventh century). There are also many excerpts. The facilities for research afforded by Dio's official duties and his own industry make him a very vital source for Roman history of the last years of the republic and the first four emperors. -- jacket
