Delacroix by Barthélémy Jobert( Book )

3 editions published between 1997 and 1998 in French and English and held by 1,030 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jobert not only re-creates the political and cultural arenas in which Delacroix thrived, but also allows readers rare opportunity to appreciate the full range of his artistic production. Delacroix's large canvases, decorative cycles, watercolors, and engravings, which are widely dispersed throughout the world, are beautifully represented here with 231 color plates. The book is timed to commemorate the bicentenary of Delacroix's birth
Faust, a tragedy by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe( Book )

72 editions published between 1828 and 2011 in 9 languages and held by 745 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Faust is a tragic play in two parts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, usually known in English as Faust, Part One and Faust, Part Two. Although rarely staged in its entirety, it is the play with the largest audience numbers on German-language stages. Faust is considered by many to be Goethe's magnum opus and the greatest work of German literature. The earliest forms of the work, known as the Urfaust, were developed between 1772 and 1775; however, the details of that development are not entirely clear. Urfaust has twenty-two scenes, one in prose, two largely prose and the remaining 1,441 lines in rhymed verse. The manuscript is lost, but a copy was discovered in 1886. The first appearance of the work in print was Faust, a Fragment, published in 1790. Goethe completed a preliminary version of what is now known as Part One in 1806. Its publication in 1808 was followed by the revised 1828-29 edition, the last to be edited by Goethe himself. Goethe finished writing Faust Part Two in 1831. In contrast to Faust Part One, the focus here is no longer on the soul of Faust, which has been sold to the devil, but rather on social phenomena such as psychology, history and politics, in addition to mystical and philosophical topics. The second part formed the principal occupation of Goethe's last years. It appeared only posthumously in 1832. - Wikipedia

Painting and the Journal of Eugène Delacroix by Michele Hannoosh( Book )

3 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 515 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Journal of Eugene Delacroix is one of the most important works in the literature of art history: the record of a life at once public and private, it is also one of the richest and most fascinating aesthetic documents of the nineteenth century, as Delacroix reflects throughout on the relations between the arts, especially painting and writing. Indeed, he approaches the question from a unique perspective, that of a painter who wrote extensively and theorized his own writing in the Journal, a painter who had a passion for literature and a powerful literary imagination, a narrative painter whose work is rooted in literature and the literary. This book is the first to explore the crucial importance of this relation for Delacroix's aesthetic theory and artistic practice. Countering the long critical tradition which sees his writing as the inverse of his painting, it argues that, through his diary and art criticism, he sought to develop a painter's writing, proper to painting itself, and that such a writing is closely related to his conception of pictorial art

Delacroix by Arlette Sérullaz( Book )

6 editions published in 2004 in 3 languages and held by 163 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Delacroix drew incessantly throughout his life. The importance the artist attached to this aspect of his work is born out by the thousands of sheets that were dispersed at the time of the sale following his death. The Louvre collection, featuring over three thousand drawings owing particularly to the generosity of a great collector, Etienne Moreau-Nelaton, illustrates by itself the complexity of a versatile genius whose style evolved over the years toward an ever more intense lyricism and a clear synthesis of forms refashioned by his imagination. Whether he would call upon the inexhaustible "dictionary" nature offered him, draw from memory or sheer invention or again, as was often the case, respond to a literary text, Delacroix was a paradoxical draughtsman, heedful of tradition but constantly overstepping it. He made use of almost every graphic technique alternately or combined: charcoal, red chalk, pastel, graphite pencil, pen, watercolour or wash, carrying them to the height of achievement or even to their breaking point."--Jacket
