Paul Klee by
Jean-Louis Ferrier(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 416 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Jean-Louis Ferrier's highly original interpretation offers us a new point of entrance into Paul Klee's playful, mysterious world. Of the artist's corpus of 8,926 works, 140 are illustrated here. Born into a family of musicians, Klee long hesitated between painting and the violin, and music remained a major source of inspiration. His quest to geometrize the subject and his work on materials, line and colour proved seminal. He began teaching at the Bauhaus in 1920, making a major contribution to the development of the visual arts. To this distinguished teaching career we owe his celebrated theoretical works, notably the Pedagogical Sketch Book."--Jacket

11 editions published in 1966 in English and German and held by 410 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book contains the essence of Klee's philosophy of painting and is probably the finest, clearest description of abstract art as understood by the creator and not the critic. Klee's genius as a guide was to transform exact scientific observation - which event he layman can grasp - into inspired imaginative interpretations of the human mind and the symbolic patterns it makes of the natural world

Paul Klee's pictorial writing by
Kathryn Porter Aichele(
Book
)
4 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 383 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Paul Klee's Pictorial Writing examines the artist's appropriation of verbal signs, literary texts, and written scripts in his pictorial works. K. Porter Aichele's study is the first to examine how linguistic symbols function in Klee's work and what they mean. Reconstructing the artist's rich cultural milieu from his diaries, letters, lecture notes, and visual allusions, Aichele shows how these sources provide the framework for fresh interpretations of works ranging from letter forms in pictorial settings to invented visual texts. Historically contextualized and interpreted as pictorial writing, Klee's familiar line drawings are shown to be a radical reinterpretation of the ut pictora poesis tradition of visual texts that question whether there is a substantive difference between writing and drawing. Aichele's multilayered readings of works from every decade of Klee's career demonstrate that the artist's doubly coded language was his most far-reaching contribution to the aesthetics of modernism."--Jacket

Paul Klee and the decorative in modern art by
Jenny Anger(
Book
)
2 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 350 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"One of the goals of modernism was the representation of the essence of art, or pure form. In this study, Jenny Anger examines Paul Klee's attitude toward and use of the decorative. She shows that the decorative, including its gendered associations, significantly informed Klee's art production, his exhibiting strategies, his critical response, and the discursive construction of his work for public consumption. She also compares his work with that of another major modernist, Henri Matisse, to confirm the critical role of the decorative in modernism. Finally, Anger explores the relevance of the decorative for contemporary, and especially women, artists."--Jacket

À l'Expressionisme allemand, i
