The old régime and the French Revolution by Alexis de Tocqueville( Book )

341 editions published between 1856 and 2015 in 14 languages and held by 4,821 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Brilliantly and searchingly examines the nature of French society in the years before the Revolution. Why did the Revolution break out? Was it inevitable, and if so, why? How was France really changed by the Revolution? Why did the intellectuals become enemies of the old French state and society? Why was the French nobility so estranged from the French people? Why, in short, were Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette doomed to the guillotines of the Revolution? In this book, Tocqueville examined these and many other questions, and in large measure definitively answered them

Writings on empire and slavery by Alexis de Tocqueville( Book )

16 editions published between 2001 and 2003 in English and held by 420 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Although Tocqueville never published a book-length study of French North Africa, his various writings on the subject provide as invaluable a portrait of French imperialism as Democracy in America does of the Early Republic period in American history. In Writings on Empire and Slavery, Jennifer Pitts has selected and translated nine of his most important dispatches on Algeria, which offer startling new insights into both Tocqueville's political thought and French liberalism's attitudes toward the political, military, and moral aspects of France's colonial expansion. Also included in this collection is Tocqueville's influential call for the abolition of slavery in the French West Indies, an action he felt would regain for France the moral high ground taken by Britain when it abolished slavery in its colonies - even as the conquest and settling of Algeria would unify the French nation and gain for it international respect."--Jacket

Recollections by Alexis de Tocqueville( Book )

"This entirely new translation of Tocqueville's 'Souvenirs'--his posthumously published, extraordinarily lucid and trenchant analysis of the 1848 revolution in France--will be the definitive English edition of the work for decades to come. Tocqueville's most polished literary text, full of bravura passages and stylistic flourishes, it was never intended for publication. Written immediately after the climax of Tocqueville's political career and just before Louis Bonaparte's 1851 coup prompted the great theorist of democracy to retire from political life, it is an exercise in candid personal reflection. Yielding to pressure from friends, Tocqueville approved its publication, but only after all characters portrayed in it--mostly unflatteringly--had died. In 1893, more than three decades after Tocqueville's death, his nephew published an expurgated version. Only in 1964 did French editors restore the potentially offensive passages. A selection of speeches, occasional texts, notes, and letters add significantly to our understanding of the revolutionary period and Tocqueville's role in it. His letters range from personal concerns to all the important political issues of the day. They illuminate not only the French conflict but the powerful reaction taking hold in Germany and Italy. They also document Tocqueville's only serious intellectual encounter with socialism and its theoreticians (Cabet, Proudhon, and Fourier, but not Marx). Finally, the edition evinces the continuing influence the United States on Tocqueville, who tirelessly, albeit futilely, promoted the American model of government for the new French Republic"--Provided by publisher
Democracy in America by Alexis de Tocqueville( Book )

6 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville and Gustave de Beaumont spent nine months in the U.S. studying American prisons on behalf of the French government. They investigated not just the prison system but indeed every aspect of American public and private life - the political, economic, religious, cultural, and above all the social life of the young nation. From Tocqueville's copious notes came Democracy in America. This English-only edition of Democracy in America features Eduardo Nolla's incisive notes to James Schleifer's English translation of the French text, with an extensive selection of early outlines, drafts, manuscript variants, marginalia, unpublished fragments, and other materials: "This new Democracy is not only the one that Tocqueville presented to the reader of 1835, then to the reader of 1840. . . the reader will see how Tocqueville proceeded with the elaboration of the main ideas of his book."
