Brilliantly and searchingly examines the nature of French society in the years before the Revolution. Why did the Revolution break out? Was it inevitable, and if so, why? How was France really changed by the Revolution? Why did the intellectuals become enemies of the old French state and society? Why was the French nobility so estranged from the French people? Why, in short, were Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette doomed to the guillotines of the Revolution? In this book, Tocqueville examined these and many other questions, and in large measure definitively answered them

Democracy in America by Alexis de Tocqueville( )

"Over one hundred and fifty years ago, Alexis de Tocqueville, a young French nobleman and an astute political scientist, came to the United States to evaluate the meaning and actual functioning of democracy. Democracy in America is the classic treatise on the American way of life that he wrote as a result of his visit." "Tocqueville discusses the advantages and dangers of the majority rule -- which he thought could be as tyrannical as the rule of the aristocracy. He analyzes the influence of political parties and the press on the government and the effect of democracy on the social, political, and economic life of the American people. He also offers some startling predictions about world politics, which history has borne out. So brilliant and penetrating are his comments and criticisms, they have vital meaning today for all who are interested in democracy. Book jacket."--Jacket
Writings on empire and slavery by Alexis de Tocqueville( )

15 editions published between 2001 and 2003 in English and held by 1,070 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Although Tocqueville never published a book-length study of French North Africa, his various writings on the subject provide as invaluable a portrait of French imperialism as Democracy in America does of the Early Republic period in American history. In Writings on Empire and Slavery, Jennifer Pitts has selected and translated nine of his most important dispatches on Algeria, which offer startling new insights into both Tocqueville's political thought and French liberalism's attitudes toward the political, military, and moral aspects of France's colonial expansion. Also included in this collection is Tocqueville's influential call for the abolition of slavery in the French West Indies, an action he felt would regain for France the moral high ground taken by Britain when it abolished slavery in its colonies - even as the conquest and settling of Algeria would unify the French nation and gain for it international respect."--Jacket

Memoir on pauperism by Alexis de Tocqueville( Book )

30 editions published between 1835 and 2017 in 3 languages and held by 542 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The 'Memoir on Pauperism' was written in 1835 immediately after Alexis de Tocqueville had completed the first volume of Democracy in America. It was based on his visit to England in 1833, where he found that one-sixth of the population had been reduced to reliance on poor relief at a cost approaching nearly one-fifth of total national expenditure." "Today, 17% of the population are reliant on income support - a strikingly similar proportion to Tocqueville's 1833 estimate - and if the other means-tested benefits are included the figure is 27%. In her introduction, Gertrude Himmelfarb, one of the foremost historians of the nineteenth century, shows the relevance of Tocqueville's insights for the modern debate about welfare reform in both Britain and America." "Tocqueville began the 'Memoir' with the paradox that the most impoverished countries in Europe, like Spain and Portugal, had few paupers; while England, the wealthiest country at the time, had many. It had happened, he argued, as an unforeseen consequence of good intentions. As wealth had grown, those who prospered were not prepared to tolerate hardship in their midst. But, in truth, the paradoxical result of this early experiment in compulsory state welfare was that beneficiaries were degraded by their reduction to dependency." "In contrast, Tocqueville believed, voluntary charity at its best established a 'moral tie' between giver and receiver and, instead of encouraging dishonesty and 'working the system', it sought to strengthen character and restore independence. Today, Himmelfarb writes, we can more than ever appreciate Tocqueville's criticism of 'government charity' as an 'entitlement'."--BOOK JACKET
