The Mozi : a complete translation by Di Mo( Book )

180 editions published between 1784 and 2015 in 6 languages and held by 959 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Mozi is a key philosophical work written by a major social and political thinker of the fifth century B.C.E. It is one of the few texts to survive the Warring States period (403-221 B.C.E.) and is crucial to understanding the origins of Chinese philosophy and two other foundational works, the Mengzi and the Xunzi. Ian Johnston provides an English translation of the entire Mozi, as well as the first bilingual edition in any European language to be published in the West. His careful translation reasserts the significance of the text's central doctrines, and his annotations and contextual explanations add vivid historical and interpretive dimensions. Part 1 of the Mozi is called the "Epitomes" and contains seven short essays on the elements of Mohist doctrine. Part 2, the "Core Doctrines," establishes the ten central tenets of Mo Zi's ethical, social, and political philosophy, while articulating his opposition to Confucianism. Part 3, the "Canons and Explanations," comprises observations on logic, language, disputation, ethics, science, and other matters, written particularly in defense of Mohism. Part 4, the "Dialogues," presents lively conversations between Master Mo and various disciples, philosophical opponents, and potential patrons. Part 5, the "Defense Chapters," details the principles and practices of defensive warfare, a subject on which Master Mo was an acknowledged authority. Now available to English-speaking readers of all backgrounds, the Mozi is a rich and varied text, and this bilingual edition provides an excellent tool for learning classical Chinese."--Jacket
Basic writings by Di Mo( Book )

30 editions published between 1962 and 2003 in English and held by 920 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Mozi (fifth century B.C.,) was an important political and social thinker and a formidable rival of the Confucianists. The most famous and original doctrine of the Mohist school was that of universal love, according to which all humankind, as creatures of God, should be loved and treated as one's own kinfolk. Considering the fierce strife and hatred that characterized the society of Mozi's time, this noble ideal extended to the condemnation of offensive warfare. Paradoxically, it led the Mohists to become experts on methods of war, as they hastened to advise vulnerable states on the strengthening of their defenses." "Mozi had deep compassion of the suffering of common people and openly attacked the abuses of feudal aristocrats and the literati, whose music, dancing, elaborate funeral rites, and luxurious living he decried as drains on the common weal. Mozi's doctrines also exhort rulers to honor the worthy, regardless of birth, and seek out men of wisdom and virtue to employ in government. At the same time, worthy individuals are encouraged to identify with superiors who are closer in the universal hierarchy to the Son of Heaven, and thus to the Lord on High who creates and loves all beings, desiring their welfare. Indeed, Mozi asserts that nature spirits and the ghosts of the dead exist, that they are cognizant of all human activities, and that they serve the Lord on High with the power to reward or punish any individual for his deeds."--Jacket

Peer Effects in Computer Assisted Learning: Evidence from a Randomized Experiment by Marcel Fafchamps( Book )

3 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We conduct a large scale RCT to investigate peer effects in computer assisted learning (CAL). Identification of peer effects relies on three levels of randomization. It is already known that CAL improves math test scores in Chinese rural schools. We find that paired treatment improves the beneficial effects of treatment for poor performers when they are paired with high performers. We test whether CAL treatment reduces the dispersion in math scores relative to controls, and we find statistically significant evidence that it does. We also demonstrate that the beneficial effects of CAL could potentially be strengthened, both in terms of average effect and in terms of reduced dispersion, if weak students are systematically paired with strong students during treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a school intervention has been identified in which peer effects unambiguously help weak students catch up with the rest of the class without imposing any learning cost on other students
