Stanley Spencer : an English vision by Stanley Spencer( Book )

14 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 578 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Stanley Spencer, a central figure in the current revival of European figurative painting, is among the most important English painters of the twentieth century. In this book, Fiona MacCarthy investigates Spencer's life, sets his work in its cultural context, and emphasises the links between his life and his paintings. With the extensive commentary - edited from Spencer's own writings - on each of the stunning reproductions of Spencer's paintings, this volume provides a comprehensive account of a profoundly original artist and his work."--Jacket
Stanley Spencer by Kitty Hauser( Book )

5 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 382 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) is one of the best-known, most highly regarded and best-loved of all twentieth-century British artists. He is famous for two things: his immortalisation of his home village of Cookham; and his celebration of sex both in his painted works and in his unconventional attitudes to relationships. His aim as a mature artist was to fuse together in his work things that are thought of as separate: religion and sex, the real and the imaginary, love and dirt, public and private, the young and the old, the heavenly and the earthbound, the self and others." "Kitty Hauser shows how Spencer's visionary imagination was rooted in specific places, experiences and social relations, and how he transformed these things into his startling pictures."--Jacket
Stanley Spencer : a complete catalogue of the paintings by Keith Bell( Book )

Stanley Spencer by Keith Bell( Book )

4 editions published between 1992 and 1999 in English and held by 224 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Keith Bell's comprehensive and detailed catalogue raisonne of Spencer's work was first published in 1992 and immediately became the standard reference work on the artist. For this second edition, Bell's narrative text is reissued as a self-contained monograph with over 500 colour illustrations. The author deals fully with Spencer's major figurative works and celebrated nudes, writes sympathetically about the artist's complicated personal life and highly unorthodox view of Christian theology, and introduces his lesser-known but highly accomplished landscapes and portraits. The notes, bibliography and indexes of the original edition have been retained, while the Catalogue has been abbreviated to a summary checklist. In its new abridged paperback format, a scholarly, readable and richly illustrated survey of one of the 'Old Masters' of modern British art is made accessible to a new and wider audience."--Jacket
Stanley Spencer, the man : correspondence and reminiscences by Stanley Spencer( Book )

Stanley Spencer by Duncan Robinson( Book )

5 editions published between 1990 and 2001 in English and held by 135 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) was the most original British painter of his era. This catalogue celebrates the achievements of an artist who continued to explore and develop over five decades. By 1914, aged only twenty-two, Spencer had completed a series of important religious works set in the Thameside village of his childhood. He experienced the First World War as a loss of Eden, yet his art was opened to complexities unguessed at in his Cookham innocence. An essay by Patrick Wright focuses on Spencer in the 1920s, uncovering a new cultural milieu and pointing to hidden themes in the murals he painted for Burchclere Chapel. Timothy Hyman charts Spencer's work as a process of autobiographical revelation, tracing his transition from the monumental Christian idealism of Giotto to his confrontation with raw reality and sexual fantasy in the crisis years of the 1930s. Both essays locate Spencer alongside his contemporaries, such as Otto Dix, Max Beckmann and Diego Rivera. Reproducing a large selection of his finest works, including several that are little known, this book offers fresh perspectives based on current research and presents a ground-breaking survey of the artist

"David Bomberg, Dora Carrington, Mark Gertler, Paul Nash, C.R.W. Nevinson and Stanley Spencer - six of the most important and distinctive British artists of the twentieth century - had all been students together at the Slade School of Art in London. They formed part of what their drawing teacher, Henry Tonks, described as the school's last 'crisis of brilliance'. For young British artists working in the years immediately before the Great War it was an exciting and demanding time as various Modernist movements fought for ..." --Publisher description
