Vorläufiges Ergebnis musikwissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen 2017: Als Schüler Albrechtsbergers in Wien und durch Kontakte zu Hummel und Clementi gelang K. zunächst ein erfolgreicher Karrierestart. Nach weiterführenden Studien am Pariser Conservatoire übersiedelte er nach London, wo er sich trotz großer Konkurrenz neben Clementi und Cramer als Klaviervirtuose behauptete. Später in Paris, verschaffte sich K. Anteile an der Klavierfabrik Pleyel&Co und avancierte Ende der 1820er Jahre zu einem der führenden und prägenden Musikerpersönlichkeiten in Paris - sowohl was die Verbreitung seiner Werke, als auch seine Konzerttätigkeit angeht. Mit den Jahren flaute der Erfolg Kalkbrenners ab, man kritisierte ihn als Komponist des Ancien régime und schuf Platz für seine Nachfolger, beispielsweise für Franz Liszt und Sigismund Thalberg.
