Residential facilities for the mentally retarded by Alfred A Baumeister( Book )

8 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 323 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The handbook on residential institutions, for professionals and students in the field of mental retardation, attempts to interpret the institution as a part of the culture which it serves, avoiding emotional responses but suggesting formulas for change. Characteristics of contemporary institutions for the mentally retarded are examined and analyzed - history, organization, programs, goals, and prospects. Included are 13 original papers. The history and evolution of institutions and their philosophies are considered, as well as the planning of residential facilities. Statistical methods and data for evaluation are discussed. Other articles treat dimensions of institutional life (social organization, possessions, time, space), and the partnership of programing and research. Specialized programs and services discussed include behavior modification, educational programs, psychological services, adjunctive therapy, speech and hearing services, medical services, and functions of social workers in residential facilities for the mentally retarded. Assessing Language Related Skills of Pre-Linguistic Children. Final Report. Volume III by George F Cairns( Book )

1 edition published in 1977 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The third of four documents reviews research on assessment in three domains (receptive language skills, expressive language skills, and perceptual and cognitive processes) as the most likely to predict subsequent language development of young children who have yet to speak their first word. Section II focuses on assessment of hearing sensitivity and speech perception, two factors that permit receptive language. Among conclusions of a third section on productive language skills are that screening is the least sophisticated assessment function; that diagnostic tests must identify a handicapping condition and indicate a treatment; and that tracking behavioral change is the most sophisticated function of assessment and is presently impossible. It is concluded in Section IV that perhaps the only immediately applicable assessment procedure used to study the cognitive and perceptual underpinnings of language is the Piagetian scale developed by J. Uzgiris and J. Hunt. Among recommendations offered in a final section are that the Bureau of Education for the Handicapped support only research whose procedures yield data that would support clinical decisions about individual infants and that support be given to more narrowly circumscribed research efforts in each of the three areas (receptive language, expressive language, and perceptual and cognitive processes) reviewed. Personality Correlates of Academic Achievement and Laboratory Learning of Elementary School Pupils. Final Report by Earl Butterfield( Book )

1 edition published in 1969 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper reports three studies designed to determine if significant increases could be made in the prediction of elementary school pupils' academic achievement by adding personality measures to intellectual measures after mental age and intelligent quotient leveling. A fourth study examined the utility of leveling pupils on socioeconomic factors. The personality variables were Locus of Control (lc), Evaluative Style (es), and Incentive Orientation (io). The subjects consisted of pupils from grades three to six in nine elementary schools. In Study I leveling procedures revealed practically significant correlations between achievement and both lc and io for pupils of below average and very high intelligence, respectively, but Study ii, conducted in different schools, failed to repeat these relationships. Study iii indicated that different schools were not a reliable determinant of the relationship between personality and achievement. Study iv suggested that socioeconomic leveling effects the relationship between these two variables. The second part of the investigation evaluated the effects of lc and es upon incidential and intentional learning. It was found that internal lc children responded with greater effort during learning than external lc pupils but that es was an inconsequential correlate of learning. (Author/RSM)

Motivational factors and IQ-changes in culturally deprived children attending nursery school by Edward Zigler( Book )

1 edition published in 1968 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Recent studies have indicated that (1) cognitive ability, (2) amount and kind of information learned to date, and (3) motivational factors all contribute to the intellectual functioning of culturally deprived children. The purpose of this study was to test the effect of cognitive achievement and motivational factors on intelligence test scores. Stanford-binet tests, form lm, were administered to 40 nursery school children and 12 nonnursery school children. At the beginning of the nursery school program, the nursery and nonnursery children received intelligence tests by both the standard and optimally-motivating procedures. This process was repeated about 7 months later, near the end of the nursery program. It was hypothesized that (1) standard testing procedures underestimate the culturally deprived child's intelligence, so that initial optimal test scores should be higher than initial standard test scores, (2) increases in standard IQ scores should be greater for the nursery than for the nonnursery children, and (3) the child's motivational structure significantly affects test scores. The experimental results required the acceptance of all three hypotheses. It was concluded that the nursery school children did not increase their intellectual ability during the nursery school program but became better able to use the intellectual capacity that they already had.
