Pedagogy of the oppressed by Paulo Freire( Book )

411 editions published between 1 and 2019 in 11 languages and held by 3,392 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pedagogy of the Oppressed written by educator Paulo Freire, proposes a pedagogy with a new relationship between teacher, student, and society. It was first published in Portuguese in 1968, and was translated by Myra Ramos into English and published in 1970.[1] The book is considered one of the foundational texts of critical pedagogy. Dedicated to what is called "the oppressed" and based on his own experience helping Brazilian adults to read and write, Freire includes a detailed Marxist class analysis in his exploration of the relationship between what he calls "the colonizer" and "the colonized". In the book Freire calls traditional pedagogy the "banking model" because it treats the student as an empty vessel to be filled with knowledge, like a piggy bank. However, he argues for pedagogy to treat the learner as a co-creator of book desc. 1986 ed

Pedagogy of indignation by Paulo Freire( )

25 editions published between 2004 and 2016 in English and held by 1,528 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Publisher description: This is the first English translation of the last book written by Paulo Freire. The book begins with a series of three deeply moving reflective "pedagogical letters" to the reader about the role of education for one's development of self. He also speaks directly to the reader about the relationship to risk in one's life and he delves deeper than before into the daily life tensions between freedom and authority. Building on these interconnected themes, Freire sharpens our sense of the critical faculties of children and how a teacher may work with children to help them realize their potential intellectually and as human beings. Subsequent chapters explore these topics in relation to the wider social world: the social constitution of the self in the work of educators; critical citizenship; and the necessity of teaching "from a position" about the world that goes beyond literacy programs to include the legacy of colonialism in peoples' resistance movements today. The book's interludes, written by Ana Maria Araújo Freire, reveal Paulo's thoughts about the content of this book as he was completing it during the last weeks and days of his life

This book represents some of the last writings by Paulo Freire, who has been acclaimed one of the most important educators of the twentieth century. Pedagogy of the Heart is filled with Freire's reminiscences of his early life and meditations under my mango tree. These meditations include discussions of solitude and community, the limit of the Right, neoliberals and progressives, lessons from exile, the Lefts and the Right, dialogism, and faith and hope. Many of these subjects will be familiar to those who have read Freire before. For those coming to Freire for the first time, Pedagogy of the
Pedagogy of solidarity by Paulo Freire( )

13 editions published between 2014 and 2016 in English and held by 1,292 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Famous Brazilian educational and social theorist Paulo Freire presents his ideas on the importance of community solidarity in moving toward social justice in schools and society. In a set of talks and interviews shortly before his death, Freire addresses issues not often highlighted in his work, such as globalization, post-modern fatalism, and the qualities of educators for the 21st century. His illuminating comments are supplemented with commentaries by other well-known scholars, such as Ana Maria Araujo Freire, Norman Denzin, Henry Giroux, and Donaldo Macedo"--

Literacy : reading the word & the world by Paulo Freire( Book )

49 editions published between 1987 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 1,263 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Paulo Freire and Donaldo Macedo invite us to re-examine the literacy crisis. They see literacy not merely as a technical skill to be acquired but as a form of cultural politics. Literacy is viewed as a set of practices that either empowers or disempowers people, and is analysed according to whether it serves to reproduce existing social formations or serves as a set of cultural practices promoting democratic change. In Literacy: Reading the Word and the World, they present not only a reconstructed theory of literacy, but concrete historical analyses of campaigns for literacy in regions such as Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe, and Guinea-Bissau. They also give a critique of old views of literacy, with pointers to new alternatives. In earlier works such as Pedagogy of the Oppressed and The Politics of Education Paulo Freire has shown how language and power are inextricably intertwined; in this new book he and his co-author expand our definition of what it means to read and, describing actual techniques used by Freire in his literacy campaigns, point the way not only to worldwide literacy but to real social transformation

Pedagogy in process : the letters to Guinea-Bissau by Paulo Freire( Book )

20 editions published between 1978 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 657 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pedagogy in Process presents a first-hand account of the most comprehensive attempt yet to put into practice Paulo Freire's theory of education within a real societal setting. When Guinea Bissau on the West African coast declared independence in 1973 the rate of illiteracy in its adult population was ninety percent. The new government faced the enormous task of educating its citizens. With Freire as collaborator and advisor the government launched a huge grass-roots literacy campaign and this book is Freire's memoir of that campaign. Those familiar with Freire's work will identify his ongoing insistence on the unity between theory and practice, mental and manual work, and past and present experience. This is essential reading for anyone interested Freire's revolutionary ideas on education and the transformative power they hold when applied to society and the classroom -- Back cover

Pedagogy of the city by Paulo Freire( Book )

26 editions published between 1991 and 2014 in 3 languages and held by 506 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is primarily comprised of interviews that took place between the first months of Paulo Freire's assuming leadership of the bureau of education in Sao Paulo, and the beginnings of his second year - including his farewell to the bureau upon his retirement." "The highly provocative observations herein confirm a central imperative, namely, that public education must play a decisive role in the continuing reformation of a democratic society. Though written from the viewpoint of an authority in another culture, the implications of Paulo Freire's dialogues reach all the way to our own inner-city schools." "Pedagogy of the City offers a plan of action for the transformation of schooling: the creation of schools that truly represent and respect the student; the creation of schools where students and their life experiences are a curriculum in interaction with teachers who can truly help them; and more." "Twenty years after the landmark U.S. publication of Pedagogy of the Oppressed, this new Pedagogy of the City will help to stimulate anew the thinking of teachers and all concerned citizens."--Jacket

La educación como práctica de la libertad by Paulo Freire( Book )

175 editions published between 1 and 2017 in 4 languages and held by 409 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Theory and resistance in education : a pedagogy for the opposition by Henry A Giroux( Book )

7 editions published between 1983 and 2001 in English and held by 327 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At the beginning of the new millennium, educators, parents, and others should reevaluate what it means for adults and young people to grow up in a world that has been radically altered by a hyper capitalism that monopolizes the educational force of culture as it ruthlessly eliminates those public spheres not governed by the logic of the market. Giroux provides new theoretical and political tools for addressing how pedagogy, knowledge, resistance, and power can be analyzed within and across a variety of cultural spheres, including but not limited to the schools. A new introduction adds much to the well received first edition. The time for radical social change has never been so urgent, since the fate of an entire generation of young people, if not democracy itself, is at stake. Giroux argues that challenge gives new meaning to the importance of resistance, the relevance of pedagogy, and the significance of political agency. --Publisher description
